Comparison of ALL Nikon Camera Buffer Capacities

If you shoot in Continuous mode this is one of your important numbers to know watch. What struck me here is that the D600 and D610 are different (looking at 14-bit), with the D610 being lower. I suspect it's because in the 2.x seconds it takes to fill the buffer, the 5.5fps D600 fills it slightly more slowly than the 6fps D610, giving the slower camera an opportunity to dump an extra 2 frames before filling.

Nikon DSLR Buffer Capacity Comparison

I can't help but stare at the DX RAW numbers and wonder when Nikon is going to realize that the format is gold for Sports and Wildlife, which are the two things you really need a large buffer for as you're shooting continuously.

I can shoot an impressive six on continuous with the D3300 in RAW and then I sit down and watch the little guy with his wheelbarrow transport my data from the cam to the storage.

I didnt realize that the 600 outperforms the 610, not a whole bunch, but still interesting. But still drool over the race car that is listed at the bottom of the table.

It really shows how the D7100 buffer is way out of line and the need for a pro Dx. I would not have expected the D600/610 to be that much more capable.

Yeah, one day with the D4. I do have a D4 baseball cap, so I have that going for me.

One thing that was striking to me was the D610 vs. D750. Uncompressed RAW is nearly identical and explainable by the difference in frame rate. But look at the compressed RAW numbers!!! Almost 50% better than uncompressed. Obviously their compression routines have improved greatly, and/or the upgraded processor works a lot better. Makes me want one. I don't need one, but it makes me want one. Unless, of course, the numbers for 14-bit compressed are wrong, because there is a gain with 12-bit compression on the 600/610, but not 14-bit.

You are right, I didn't even look at the 7100, it should have been closer to the 600/610, but its worse than the 7000. I get the difference in file size, but it does appear undersized on the 7100. I really haven't paid much attention to the D4S specs because its a unicorn for me right now, but man that thing screams compared to the rest.

Oh, I know all about how they screwed up the D7100 and posted my own personal bitch-fest 2 years ago when it was announced. I had 2 issues with my D7000 - high ISO noise and buffer capacity, and the latter was more important for me. There were complaints about the size of the D7000 buffer at the time, and what does Nikon do? Increase file size 50% and not change the buffer size. It was as ludicrous then as it is now, and I still get pissed about it. I love my D7100, but when I need that extra second it infuriates me. If (when?) they finally put out a DX camera that performs the way a pro would want one to with the current sensor technology I'll be all over it. I don't need a better FX camera than what I have, but that would make me open my wallet.

I'm with you on that, need an increase in fps. I was holding out on a 7100 till this 750 came out, but it was a miss for me so I will hold out a little while longer. I have some ideas on my sports shots but can't achieve with the current setup, need speed, but not 6k worth of speed. As bad I hate to say it, the new Canon is what I was hoping the 750 would be. Oh well maybe there isn't enough of a need, or maybe Nikon needs to wake up and listen. I hate the fact that I was ready to pick up a DX with speed and now I may have to wait another year to see if they come up with something.

Yeah, I love my D7100, but the buffer is just crazy small. Waiting to see what they do with the D7200 (or whatever they are going to call it.)

Just curious as to how many shots can you get in the real world before the buffer slows you down on the cameras that have been mentioned.

The D7000 is I think 6 fps as advertised.

On my D7000 I can get 18 to 20 or so before the buffer slows it down. I use both card slots for jpeg and raw with SanDisk ultra pro cards that are 90mbs. For wildlife this is a great set up with the Nikon AF-S f/4 300mm.
