Need Help - Video on DSLR

Hello Everyone,

All opinions are welcome. Please help me: I am a Casting Director for a TV company. For the longest time we've been using DVX100 to record our auditions. Finally, we are given the option to buy new cameras. Budget up to 1200$

What I need: good sound, being able to focus, zoom in and zoom out during the interviews/auditions. I need something that uses SD cards.

What I do not want: I have Nikon D3100 ...when I zoom in and zoom out, you can actually HEAR it in playback.

Please let me know which DSLRs are good for this?

Thank You Very Much!

What you need for that is an external microphone (even of the $20 class), to get it off camera, and farther from the zoom motor - possibly a lavalier mic that the subject wears. I use this one, and consider it more than fine enough for human speech.
Polsen OLM-10 Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone OLM-10 B&H

Unfortunately, the D3100 seems to be the ONE model that does not provide for plugging in an external microphone. The others do provide for it, including the D3200 and D3300. Check the manuals first, at

I'm not trying to be snarky, but.... $1200 for a camera budget for a TV company???? And you used the 'plural' spelling for camera, meaning 'more than one' ??????????????

The focus noise can be eliminated by using a manual lens and pulling a focus manually... and using an external recorder and microphone...

Some of the Rokinon lenses are getting very good reviews relative to DSLR lenses... A good recorder system such as the Zoom H4n gets high marks for semi-pro to Pro audio quality...

Both the above would fit your budget for a D3100...
