Some formals I took for my sisters wedding

The photographer they had canceled a few weeks before so I told her I would shoot her wedding. I had never done it before but it was unpaid so I figured I could afford to make a mistake. I think it worked out well.

I believe these are all from my D750 (I had my D800 but don't think I used it for these types of shots) and 24-70mm. The majority of the wedding itself were shot using natural light (to avoid running around with strobes/flashes in a cramped backyard wedding) but these formals were done with a Phottix Indra500 and triggers with Phottix Odin with a Westcott Rapidbox XXL for diffusion.

Only thing I would have changed would be to shoot that lens wide open giving you some background separation. Otherwise, great lighting, great composition, the pictures are great.

Over use of the hand on hip..the bride has flowers for a reason ..adds colour gives her something to do with her hands.
Fingers of the lady in blue on the brides waist " disconnected hand syndrome" dont do it.Same for hands on shoulders or touching children. There are hands that show affection which is fine and hands that show ownership of the bride by the groom which is bad.
Hands in men should never be clasped together in front ..footballer pose or behind the back ..amputee or in older people lifted with a clenched fist which indicates a stroke.
Never stand people square to the camera .. standing square is for the lodge.
For the first one should have had a full length 3/4 and head an shoulders or crop as required..maybe you did that.

For the groom the background is a bit dark and while its the best of the set the dappled light on the jacket spoils that true formal shot perfection.

For the three shot ..what is that branch with sunflower sticking out her head..photoshop...the flowers are back, she is turned slightly,mum is fine but dad ..that jacket is all pushed under his arm showing creased shirt and his head is not straight . Always watch for trees ,poles and drain pipes in the background.

Wedding photography is like no other ..forget all that flash remotes and umbrellas ..one simple flash on the camera with a flash flipper to avoid shaddows and concentrate on the detail ..what will people look at when they see this picture ...should be the bride and faces but if its dads creased shirt thats not right and dad is embarased.

I didn't say I wanted a review. Not sure why you worded the first sentence like that. But helpful advice either way.

Glad you took it like that .. In my day you could not get insurance for wedding photography unless you joined Master Photographers Associator etc so you got 3 people picking over your work and soon learned what to look for ..

great stuff ..onwards and upwards....
