200-500mm Tripod Collar ??

I have never been around a lens large enough to require a tripod collar so this is new to me. I haven't investigated this completely, but before I break something does the tripod collar tighten down enough to keep the lens from rotating or is there still some friction movement when it is tightened?

I have hand tightened the knob on the collar and I can hold the lens and the collar can be turned feeling resistance, but not hard however. I will investigate more later. I will remove the collar and see what I can see like maybe a piece of plastic or something keeping it from being completely tightened down.

Upon closer inspection, the locking knob is completely closing the collar gap, but not securely locking on the lens. Defective collar it appears. I will be calling Adorama tomorrow. I think I could fix it by doing a little work on the gap (opening it up some with a little sandpaper), but this is new and should be right when I get it. Ha!

Update #1

I talked to Adorama today and they told me to return the lens and they will send me another one. Booooo! I was hoping they would just be able to send me a new tripod collar, but they do not have one in the warehouse and were not willing to take one from another lens. Oh well, I did play a little with the lens this AM. I will be in the market for a better method of carrying in a strap design or something. Ha! It is not the best walk about lens for me. I think it is a better sit on the porch lens. Ha!

I talked to Adorama today and they told me to return the lens and they will send me another one. Booooo! I was hoping they would just be able to send me a new tripod collar, but they do not have one in the warehouse and were not willing to take one from another lens. Oh well, I did play a little with the lens this AM. I will be in the market for a better method of carrying in a strap design or something. Ha! It is not the best walk about lens for me. I think it is a better sit on the porch lens. Ha!

I walk around with my D750 and Tamron 150-600 all the time. I flip the tripod collar up so the mount is on the top. I always have my standard strap on and I then use the tripod collar as a handle while I am just walking around.

Inside the collar is it missing the smooth plastic ring inside? I see no other way for you to be able to tighten the knob as you say and it not get tight.
You can see it here do you have this inside?
This is also something I did I drilled and tapped a 2nd hole in my bracket to secure my RRS foot so it would rotate when I carry it on my monopod or tripod.

Yes is strange issue you have note that when mine is on and snug I have no gap in the slot either so the tolerance is very tight.

If I had had it for awhile and it developed the problem I would have done one of two things: added something ie rubberband to the inside of the collar or opened up the space in the clamps gap so it would tighten a little more, but with it new it goes back for another one. Ha!

I am sorry to hear that Walt. I hope they ship it before they get yours back.

I agree on the porch sitting part. When I do carry mine I use a Peak Design strap connected to the body and I carry it upside down using the Tripod foot as a handle. I found that I could swing it up that way and support the lens via the foot when I take the shot. But mostly I shoot from the porch on a tripod. I have also gotten more comfortable carrying it on my shoulder on the mono or tripod. That took some getting use too.

I really like the Black Rapid (or similar type) for carrying my lens Walt, 1, the standard strap sweats my neck in the heat we get an 2, it does make the weight easier when its on your shoulders.

Now its mounted to my tripod/gimbal and i just carry that over my shoulders on a walk.

Update #2
Lens package was put on a UPS truck today going back to the store with the request for a refund. To get my new one faster, I ordered another today. Reason is that it was going to take over 2 weeks for a new one if I just had them replace the one that was bad. This way I should have the new one next week by Tuesday or Wednesday.

I received my new 200-500mm lens bundle this evening. Hooray! The tripod collar locks like expected on this one. If the lens works, I will be a happy camper. Well, that is also dependent on if I get the refund in a week or so for the lens I returned. Ha!

I only shot with the first one for an hour or so. Just a few shots through a window in the house and overcast conditions, but it seemed to do what I expected. I never did hook the TC-14EII up to it, however. I want to try to see how the lens works by itself first and then add the TC to it for the next step. Ha! Now just to figure out how to carry all of the gear. A pelican case, backpack, ................................. And then looking for a monopod and maybe a Gimbal head or heavier ball head than what I have.

It's a never ending spiral.

I haven't used the TC yet either, but having shot a Tamron 150-600 with my D7100, I figured going to 200-500 AND dropping to a full frame body I better at least have the TC available. Even so, the Tamron is f/6.3 at 600mm, so using the TC with the Nikon should get me similar AF performance. I've been impressed with the AF on this big lens so far.

Glad to here you got your new lens and everything is working great now!
I use a Kenko 300 1.4 DGX with my 200-500 works great also.
