Hoping you or some one else can help me,got the Nikon 1 v2 with a few uses in mind, one is as a macro camera with a my sigma 105 macro,to this end i would like to use the SB-N7 or 5 off camera via a TTL cable,i think both guns are iTTL.I took the first obvious step contacted Nikon to ask can it be used off camera via a cable and got the following answer.

Dear Michael.

Thank you for your e-mail.

The SB-N5 and SB-N7 are two dedicated Speedlights for use with the Nikon 1 V2 camera.

The SB-N7 has a recommended retail price of £149.99 and is available from the Nikon Online Store from the link below.

The SB-N7 can not be used with a TTL or wireless.

Interesting idea! I would think it would work using a cable, if there is a cable that will fit the Nikon 1 hot shoe and the flash!
I doubt the sb-n5 would work, but the sb-n7 should work I would think(if you can find the right cable).

You have most likley answered it Bill, neve took the hot shoe cover off the V2 just made a stupid assumption it was a normal flash fitting, should have known better, looks like it will be flash on camera and a snood to direct the light.

Thanks, not thought of that not that i understand the out put

Output Approx. 130 lx/65 lx at 1 m (3.3 ft), selected with switch

"LX" is short for... LUX, so you can see why they'd want to abbreviate.

Further, I can tell you 1 lux equals the amount of light that falls on a one-square-meter surface that is placed one meter away from a single candle. So, to translate just how powerful that light unit is, just imagine how much light 130 candles would shed on a one square meter surface one meter away. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

How's THAT for helpful?!

100 lux is the brightness of an overcast day per Wikipedia. It would help in some situations, but not as much power as a speedlight.

Another option would be to use an off camera flash triggered by the on camera flash via an optical slave.

Being macro i would have liked some form of TTL

Just had a thought about how bright some of the latest cycle lights are,the first one i found was 400 lumens but trying to use a converter chart is confusing but that looks like its more powerful and cheaper

An Ice Light is 1160 lumens.

I think the lumen would be the output of the source and the lux would be what hits the subject. So if you concentrated your 100 lumens on a square meter, it would produce 100 lux.

I googled this a little, and someone used a sb-800 with the sb-n7! The camera triggered the sb-800, and it worked well from what I was able to read before my tablet kicked me off the site.
The sb-800 was more flash power than needed, but it still worked. So maybe other flashes will work for ya Mike buddy, maybe you already own a flash that will work? I haven't tried this myself, even though I have the sb-n7 and the sb-800. But if this works, other Nikon flashes should also work I would think.

I'm sorry Mike, but I am completely ignorant about the Nikon 1 cameras, never seen one. The only cable that can work with any iTTL is the hot shoe extension cables, but the 1 hot shoe is a new proprietary shape, so regular flashes or cables will not fit it.

Thanks anyway Wayne

Well you can use any flash that can be used in a slave mode to be ignited through any light source that it picks up. As for working with TTL, I would not find that at all possible, unless you are able to retrofit the hot shoe of the 1 series camera to be used with a standard TTL hot shoe.
