Yongnuo warranty... US vs. International

Is adding a US warranty on a Y565 worth the extra $37? I guess I'm wondering if anyone has actually had to use it, and if they did, were they successful.
I'm looking at it on Amazon Prime.
Thanks!

There was a thread recently that touched on this. I don't remember the details but what I took from the thread was because the person didn't have the right warranty it ended up being more of a hassle to deal with. I think through Amazon (and being in the U.S.) if you have international then you have to contact Yongnuo. But if you have U.S. warranty then you deal with Amazon (which is probably easier). But I would check on that first. The thread couldn't be older than a month if you do a search you should find it.

What does a US warranty entail?
Does it mean you only need to post it to a US address for warranty repairs? If so, what is the cost to do the same back to Yongnuo for a warranty repair (assuming they don't have a US presence).

Also, what is your standard warranty in the US?
In the UK, all electrical items have a standard 2 year EU defined warranty as a minimum (where the issue is due to a manufacturing fault).

Here is what Amazon says on the International Warranty purchase for $98.84 "Important Warranty Information: This new product carries an international warranty, which is not valid in the US. A US version of this and related Yongnuo products are also available with a 1-year US warranty"

And on the US warranty purchase for $134.93 it says "Returns and service promptly performed in the USA for orders that are sold by and shipped from Amazon.com (must provide Amazon invoice copy for return authorization)"

I don't know, but I doubt Amazon is in the business of repairing flashes. They can just replace a few flashes, and still make money on the additional warranty sales. I don't know how their warranty price was decided, but I'm sure their investment is considered fail safe. $37 warranty on a $99 flash seems extremely expensive. For that much cost, I'd rather just be my own insurer.... my risk, and my gain when it doesn't fail. Amazon obviously thinks it is a good bet. I guess our viewpoint will be decided if the flash fails in first year or not. :) I've never heard a success story about sending one to China for repair.

But there is advantage in buying through Amazon, in case of any early issue, they do accept returns. Try that from China. :)

My YN565EX is 10 months plus, and still going strong. Almost there. :)

Yea Wayne, that is my exact thoughts.. if someone found the warranty extremely helpful I might consider it.. but except for that I'm leaning towards not getting it and just taking a chance at it being "affordable" w/o the additional US cost. I don't know what the return policy on this is.. I should look. I've been extremely pleased with Amazon returns in the past.

I emailed the seller before I purchased, and was told that they would honor the US warranty because I bought it here.
They are located in Long Island. After the sale, They would not honor, and told me that I would have to deal directly with the manufacturer.
So to answer your question, no, I did not pay the $137. They implied that it was covered.
When I forwarded them the original emails, the would no longer communicate.
Apparently, Amazon is aware of this, because they jumped it quickly to refund the cost of the unit.
I applied that to the cost of a SB-700. Couldn't be happier.

I actually asked Yongnuo about this. Basically anything sold through Amazon directly (not an FBA seller or listing through Amazon) has the US warranty because Amazon is taking care of returning defective units to Yongnuo and sending you a new one. Other sellers may do this, but if they are out of stock then chances are it's going to take some extra time to get a new one, whereas Amazon is pretty quick about turning things around. And as Steve said, they may not honor it at all.

So to put it another way as far as Yongnuo is concerned there is no "US Warranty" there's just a warranty, but if you go through Amazon you won't have to worry about sending a defective unit back to China and getting a new one from Yongnuo.

I suspect normal Amazon 30 day time limit obviously does apply, but still, this beats China. :)

That's correct, John. Also, in my communication with Yongnou, they offered to repair or replace the flash.
The only drawback was that I had to pay for shipping both ways. This came out to $83.00 each way for a total of $166.00.

Eerk! I hope you didn't do that - it would've been cheaper to buy a new one.

No, I didn't. Amazon got involved, and they realized that the seller would not honor the warranty.
They stepped up and issued me a credit for the price of the flash. I applied this towards the purchase of a SB-700.
They didn't even want the flash returned. (it was well over the 30 return period) By their emails, it sounded like they had problems with this (A&R Photo) seller before.
Excellent customer service from amazon.
The Yongnuo flash is now a paperweight on my desk.
