I saw this new product posted on Scott Kelby's blog a couple weeks ago and had to order one. This is a detachable honeycomb grid for your flash, and has 3 different grid angles for spotlighting control. The creative implications of this cool little doodad are many, but if you're the practical type, it makes for a great hair light modifier in portrait shots.

I've been playing around with this thing all morning, and it definitely fits the bill for a portable solution to spotlighting. It's very well built and the velcro strap holds it firmly in place. My only complaint is that the carry bag opening could be a bit larger, so that it was easier to store the grid and strap inside.

Not a cheap accessory, but not overpriced by any means, weighing in at about $50.

oh cool - do you have any example shots?

Nah, nothing serious enough to post. I have 2 photo shoots tonight, so I'm hoping to be able to use my new toy on at least one of them.

One of my assignments tonight is to shoot the cast of the upcoming HS musical, "Hello, Dolly". I want to use the grid to create a spotlight effect on some of the cast members on stage.

This was definitely a challenge. The auditorium where I was shooting from was mostly dark. I was competing with the stage lighting on top of everything else. This one didn't turn out too bad, and will probably be the one the editor chooses to go in the paper. I'm not too happy with the odd shadow cast on the umbrella, but meh...beggars can't be choosers.

Nice picture Anthony.
I also saw this product early this year. I was curious about it. Can you post a picture of your flash with this grid attached?
I want to see how big is this one and if it will fit different kinds of flash from the SB900 to the small ones.
Im fond of grids for rim light and side lights. I have a Honl grid and also I made one (DIY) similar to the Honl grid.

Ya, sure thing. The strap is adjustable, and seems like it would fit a variety of flashes. My LumoPro LP160 is comparable to the SB900 in size, and there is still plenty of room to go bigger. I'll post up a couple shots of it on and off the flash.

This is what comes in the kit. (L to R from top):

  • 45° grid
  • 25° grid (when stacked w/ above = 16°)
  • Bezel (holds grids)
  • Strap
  • Carrying pouch

Strap attached to the flash. The elastic strap can be removed and snapped on in two different locations (can see the snap better in the first photo) for large or small flash heads. Note the inner material is reflective!

And here's the money shot. A very professional looking rig.

Nice
How is the strap attached to the bezel? Velcro?
Nice idea there for the strap. It eliminates the light bleed on the side which the Honl grid has.
Thats why I made my own adapter with black close cell foam so that i wont have light leaks.
