Members Galleries seem to be lacking...

When looking for Members photos, I notice that there are quite a lot of people who don't have many shots on here. I must admit I'm looking in the left hand side bar which says Images and a number. I gather if it doesn't say Images the member doesn't have a 'Gallery' on here? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

One other little thing. It's difficult for some of the members all over the world to know where members are actually from. I realise that a lot of members are from the U.S. but typing the city and the state would make it much easier for us 'non-locals'. Most of us know all the states but not the shortened versions. Just an observation, not a criticism. Cheers, Brad :)

I'm surprised to hear that because I see a lot, but I've been here only a short time so my frame of reference is likely not as accurate as yours.

I recently started posing a few images to flickr due to ease of use - may look at photobucket as well - don't know which one is best, however a couple of folks here suggested flickr.

I find nikonites' galleries posting a bit of a pain - seems there's several steps, image size requirements, etc., and I tend to forget the routine. I don't know the in's-and-out's of directing friends/relatives to nikonites' galleries, either. I belong to a number of forums for various purposes, and find it easier to have a general, all-in one point of reference for all my images, especially since I don't like to do cross-forum reference links.

Used to do both, but in between the gallery had some issues so had stopped...
guessing it's fixed now, but kinda lost the 'flow' :)
should re-start if all's well

Almost all of my are in the gallery. I did not originally put them there and they went straight into the post but like having them all together in the gallery.

I ask all new member to fill out their profile and that include location and equipment. It really helps us to know where you are from because questions are answered differently for someone in the USA versus someone in India. We both have different buying opportunities. As for equipment people ask a question concerning how to do something and do not tell us what camera so we have to ask and then wait for them to answer before we can give a correct answer or even worse someone will give a answer that works for their camera but it totally wrong for the posters question.

So if you have not filled out your profile please do everyone.

You can do that at http://nikonites.com/profile.php?do=editprofile

OK, so I uploaded an image to my gallery.

I tried to do a second one and it took about thirty minutes converting it from raw to jpg, then it was too big, etc. I gave up.

Sorry, I like being a member of the community and eventually will ask folks to critique my stuff, but it needs to be easier.

I do it simply myself. I post process my image, crop if needed, then size it. Since all my photos are being posted here that make it simple in the sizing department. For most others here you'd likely do better for your needs to size it first for your largest need then make a copy in a smaller size suitable for uploading to the gallery here. I tend to do my longest side of the photo at 1000 keeping the ratio and then it uploads easily to the gallery. Then when posting on a thread I click on the my photos button to find and select the photos I wish to add to my post.
But I do believe this will become harder the more photos I add due to the need to search through my gallery to find the photos to post them.

But anyway that's how I've been managing it so far anyway! Lol :D

Convert it to JPEG and resize it to 1000px on the long side before you upload and it will work much better.,

I use ViewNX2 to do my PP and then resize using the Convert option with 1000 being the long side. I post to the gallery every day without any problems. There have been a few days where a change was made somewhere that caused an upload problem, but it's always been corrected. I have 4,342 photos in the gallery, so trust me, it works.

I post most of my shots either in threads or to my website, should probably put more in the gallery.

What Carguy and Brusader said!

Wait a minute.

I just went and uploaded 2 photos to my gallery and it took less than a minute to upload both. Maybe I was lucky because I just used 2 random pictures that were shot in JPEG and didnt PP either of them (that I remember anyway). It took me longer to find the link to upload to my gallery than it did to upload both files.

Yeah, I think that's my issue. There's a bit of routine, but I know it's possible because I've done it.

I've been shooting raw which creates a 6000x4000, 30mb file. I think I was being stubborn about having to go through the conversion process, and maybe I've gotten lazy because flickr is so easy.

Obviously, the forum is not a huge organization with unlimited funding for storage servers and has to have some limitations which is completely understandable, so as a group please accept my apology.

I have tried to upload my pics but they are too big. I haven't been able to make them smaller to upload as I don't know how, but would love to. Maybe a tutorial for newbies?

Depending on your operating system, there are easy ways to resize pictures. The main thing to remember is that even if you resize, if you don't also reduce the definition your files will stay large. I recommend reducing the definition to 72 dpi (monitor's native definition) and resize to maximum (width of length) of 1000 pixels.

You can google "picture resize" and learn how to do it easily.

Enjoy.

Are you shooting in JPEG or RAW? Are you using any software to post-process?

Shooting in Jpeg, use elements 11 to sometimes edit. This is all new to me as a newbie photographer and not technically minded!
