Contacting non posting members

@jdeg

Do we have a auto mail to members that dont visit or post in a certain length of time,to remind them of the quality of this forum and then perhaps a later one if they dont visit or post asking them if they would tell us why they are absent.

I think a lot of people join to ask a question, and only post 2 or 3 times. so this is a good idea to send them a email as a reminder.

Or you could do like some other forums and just delete their account after 12mnths if they have not posted.

I think that we should distinguish between non-posters and those who do not visit at all. The latter are just no longer interested in the forum, so their account may be deleted. The latter (if they are active readers), may simply have nothing to contribute, but interested in the news.

Deleting accounts take away from overall member count. Something that shouldn't be done IMHO. A high member count makes the site more appealing to new members. It doesn't bother me that we have this.

If it matters, when I wander away from a forum it's for good reason - at least to me - and when I get my inbox filled with reminders that my membership has waned it does nothing to spark any interest in coming back. If nothing else it reminds me of all the reason I left in the first place, to the extent that I've actually added the domain to my block email list.

If a values old member has been missing then you can usually be sure that at least a couple folks have reached out. If they come back, they come back. If not, poking them will likely annoy them more than anything. But hey, what do I know?

Jake.....just wanted you to know that as we close out 2014, it's been great reading your posts and learning from you. I hope you continue on Nikonites in the future. It would be a big loss if you left. Thanks for hanging around. Cheers to more stuff to learn from you in 2015.

I appreciate that, and I'm not going anywhere - at least not permanently (I'm allowed to have a life, right? ;) ). These places go through organic peaks and valleys, and folks come and go either because they're fed up with some things or because, well, life should trump the internet and while it's sad for those who lose contact I absolutely understand and respect those who just get out and live.

It's like me. I was busy on here the first year or so, learning about settings and posting challenges to improve. Doing that, I have opened a new window for myself to do family portraits. weddings and my card business. It now keeps me on the go or busy on the computer. It is still fun for me and not a job. That means less time on the forum. I will jump in if a subject or photo grabs my attention or a challenge is up my alley. It's never anyone's intention to stay gone for a long period. Like an earlier comment, some just sign up for a question and never return. I sometimes get on and troll the posts and read them without commenting. Some things are repeats of what was discussed in the last 4 years on here.

I'm going out shooting this morning. I should be back by this afternoon. If I'm not back by morning, someone call the cops.:excitement:

I agree with Jake. If I wondered off and then started getting impersonal automated emails, it wouldn't enamor me in the slightest.

But, I think you could take their cue from whether or not they left a public email address. Leaving a public email, basically means, "OK to contact"; no public email means, "do not disturb".

If someone I interact with a fair amount seemed absent for no reason, and they left a public email address on file, I would email and check on them (so to speak) or as some have done, just post a public query of "wonder what happened to X?".

My 25 cents worth.

Why delete a non participating member? What advantage would that give the forum? If I hadn't been on in a while and later came back to find my membership had been terminated. It would bother me enough not to come back.

Provided the information was filled out by the member, many forums will automatically email out a birthday greeting.

I think it depends on several factors. We had a member who recently left and we don't really know why. All we can do is speculate, and that person wanted to be deleted. Hopefully, in the future, if someone is thinking about leaving, they will take it to the lounge and voice their concerns. Possibly we can salvage a good member. If it's personal, there isn't much we can do. Hopefully everyone will take the time before they post to make sure they are thinking and concerned about how they sound before sounding off. Treat others as you would have them treat you! Golden rule!
