Bringing Back the Weekly Challenge

As the original creator of the Weekly Photo Challenge, I feel a certain responsibility for both its initial success and untimely demise.

When this site was in its infancy, we had a very small pool of participants to draw from, and an even smaller team to manage the contests. It was a well-designed system that was run by the community, but any time there was a hiccup, the system would implode upon itself. Over time, the weekly challenge evolved into what it is today. Those who have keep it running have done an excellent job.

There have been several calls to action over the years regarding these challenges. To those in the community who have voiced concerns, let me tell you up front: running these things is not an easy task. It's a thankless job, and no one seems to notice when things are running smoothly. That being said, I am not in the minority when I say that many of these calls to action are not without merit. When I started the Weekly Photo Challenge, there were two goals: #1 - being run by the community and #2 - being weekly to keep topics fresh to get people out there shooting regularly.

It is my belief, and one that is shared by many others, that the monthly version is lacking something. Part of what made the Weekly Photo Challenge a success was that the winners chose the next topic and were responsible for judging the entries to their contest. These elements added new layers to the challenge. Not only could members participate in taking the photo, but they were rewarded for winning. This was the former weekly challenge's greatest strength and greatest weakness.

We now have a vote/like system, and will use that to determine a weekly winner. The winner will still get to pick the topic for the next challenge.

I am bringing back the Weekly Photo Challenge, but I need some help from the community.
1) I need four volunteers to assist with running the contests. Those who are interested, be careful what you wish for. I will start an invite-only group so that we can have our own area to discuss issues regarding the contests. This is NOT a promotion to moderator status. Any volunteer must be a long-standing member of Nikonites and be very familiar with how to navigate the forums/edit posts/etc.

2) I would also like 1 moderator volunteer to assist us. Sometimes things get posted in the wrong place, and we may need a janitor (LOL). In addition, the original sticky post in the Weekly Photo Challenge forum has been edited, and it will need to be altered or removed.

How the Challenge Works

  1. Each challenge will run for 1 (one) week, beginning on Wednesday and ending at midnight (eastern daylight time) on the following Wednesday. Most people can shoot more on the weekends, and this way, we're not all waiting for a new theme to be posted during peak shooting times.
  2. Every week will have it's own thread. The title of each thread will be titled as follows: Weekly Challenge [dates]: [subject]
  3. A winner will be chosen based on the number of post "Likes". Vote for yourself, vote for as many entries as you like.
  4. All members of Nikonites (including moderators) are allowed to participate.
  5. Winners will PM new challenge topics to members of the Weekly Photo Challenge team so that a new thread can be started. This is so there is some consistency in how the threads look, and how the contest is ran.

The Rules
  1. Photos must be posted to the thread in order to be considered for the challenge. No gallery images or off-site links (flickr, 500px, etc) will be accepted.
  2. Any photo submitted for a weekly challenge must be taken during the dates specified in the challenge thread.
  3. Winners are determined by the number of "Likes", so don't forget to vote! You can vote for more than one image. You do not need to participate in the contest to vote.
  4. In the event of a tie at contest end, the Weekly Photo Challenge team will determine a winner.
  5. Only one photo entry per member for each week, unless otherwise noted.

There will be no cash or prizes awarded for the Weekly Photo Challenge, unless specifically noted by the site administrator. This is a member-run contest, and the purpose of the Weekly Photo Challenge is to encourage member participation on the forums and to keep you taking pictures!

Any photo will be accepted for the challenge. Edited/straight out of the camera, it does not matter. You are left with complete freedom to do whatever genre of photography you wish to do, and your own interpretation of the challenge subject.

I offer my support for the idea.

I would offer to help, but haven't been around long enough to be long-standing and I sit most of the time while on the forum.:)

Great idea! Like @Eyelight, I don't think I'm "long standing", but add me to the rotation down the road if one of the volunteers needs to rotate out and you need people to backfill.

I should've been more specific in regards to "long-standing": I'm looking for members who are regulars on the forums. Someone who just signed up a month ago and has 3 posts...not so much. The main thing is having some familiarity with how vBulletin (the forum software) operates from a posting standpoint. Being able to upload and attach photos to a post, adding some visual formating, that kind of stuff.

I also should've specified that while I'm spearheading this operation, I'm not looking to rule over it with an iron fist. This is a collaboration, and everyone on the team will have an equal voice in getting this thing set up so that it's to the best benefit to the community. There has been a lot of feedback tossed around about these contests, so we need to corral them all together and come up with a solution. It's never going to please everyone, but we should be able to take a good whack at it.

I AM INTERESTED IN BEING A VOLUNTEER. I AM NOT SURE HOW FAMILIAR I AM WITH ALL THE IN'S AND OUT'S OF THE SITE.

Put me in coach! I'll help if needed. I have used vbulletin and bhpbb. More bhpbb, but the two are pretty close. Though not exactly a long time member. I've posted a few times.

Alright, then I'll put my name in the hat now instead of later. :D

I'm very familiar with vBulletin and still own a license that I used to use on my personal website while I was administering a similar sized motorcycle forum (I've seen replaced my personal website with WordPress, but still have the vb license). I'm on the forum every day, and this is my goto photography forum. I've only been here coming up on two months, but have been active since jumping in. I'm also good with waiting to relieve someone later as originally mentioned, no worries.

Nearly ditto. No issue navigating, posting, using big words, or colorful language. Now (what are we waiting for?) or later is also fine with me.

We have been working hard behind the scenes, and will begin the new weekly challenges tomorrow. However, I just noticed a major problem.

I assume entire Weekly Photo Challenges Forum forum is locked down, and no one can post there. There is no option to start a new thread. Can someone look into this please, and fix it?

I just checked and I can make new posts and I don't think it has to do with my being a Mod... I'll see what I can find out and let you know.

If you were talking about the rules and guidelines "sticky", I just unlocked it for you.

Let me know.

I think the Monthly Assignments and Weekly Photo Challenge forums share the same settings. Only moderators can add new topics.
