Merging forums...

Maybe it may be a good idea merging the D3xxx forums together, the same said with the D5xxx bodies. With such similarities between the D3/5xxx bodies is there such a need for a D31,32,33 etc. While MP count slightly changes and relatively small changes distinguishing the newer body, everyone with a said D3xxx body can easily relate. The same with the D5xxx bodies.

Just sayin...

Whilst there may be similarity's between models i think it helps total newcomers if the models are kept separate something less for them to have to get there heads round.

I get both sides ... having it split out is nice from a search perspective, but at the same time it leaves a lot more forums with little traffic.

As a D5300 owner, I wouldn't be concerned about the D5x00 forums being combined, but I can also see where D5100 owners don't want to listen to me whine about the GPS not behaving the way I'd like. :)

But they miss so much if they only look at what is in one place. Usually the question is about "photography" or lenses or flash or white balance or exposure or ISO or memory cards or something that has nothing to do with the specific camera anyway.

Yes, agreed, there are too many @%#$& forums now, diluting the information that is available - divided about every possible way there is to divide it (for maximum flash and sizzle of appearance I suppose). Good answers to basic questions in say D7000 forum will never be seen by most readers. Therefore, it almost seems wasted effort to try to help. :)

Exactly Wayne. The relative information should be shared between similar models. Besides, how many "I took this picture with my D3/5XXX hey look at me" do we need. With those specific models they will still share the same basic operation (menu based) and any problems that arise would most likely be information that can help someone with that generic model body series.

When I was a brand new member I did look at the D3100 section but soon learned to click on the "What's New" button and then look at all posts. I could generally tell by title whether it was model specific or more general information that I could learn from. Some questions I can answer because it is basic photography and pretty much is the same no matter what camera you shoot. I can also answer questions that are more specific about the D3100, D5100, D7000 and the D7100 because I have shoot all of them. It is is a specific question about a D800 I just click on by because there are better sources on here for those.
If you are limiting yourself to just the specific part of the forum that is for your camera you are missing way to much.

I have a shortcut set up on my desktop that carries me directly to new posts. It saves me a lot of time. Look over the list and see what you might learn from and click on them. When you get through with the list click on "Mark forum read" to clear the list for a fresh start next time you log on.

The problem, if you want to call it that, is posters frequently want forums dedicated to their platform and often demand them. At least this has been my experience on other boards where I've moderated. I have a feeling "Upper Management" would not mind having fewer forums but has probably just been giving the people what they ask for; not that I'm trying to speak for anyone.

All that being said, I too support the idea of collapsing the 3XXX/5XXX/7XXX sub-forums into parent-model forums.

A D3XXX forum would be dedicated to the D3XXX platform.
A D5XXX forum would be the same....
Same platform slightly newer programming innovation as model years change. Body... hasn't changed much. So aside from a newer sensor it's still the same compact body and relatively similar Gui. Besides all of that the only physical differences, between D5XXX and D3XXX would be the movable view screen.

Why would you need, lets say a forum for a Toyota Corolla base, Toyota Corolla S, Toyota Corolla LE. When only slight things change and it's the same car.

I also endorse this idea.

Personally, I think the layout of the forum has gotten too specific. At this point, I have more sections minimized than open.

I get lost in the learning photography section. I want to post a pic of my dog, and I never remember where the pet pics are. Then I have to do a search, and then...oh yea.....It's in the portrait section.:cower:

The problem is the moderator staff. They're all overpaid, lazy fatcats with nothing better to do except sit around in their cushy lounge drinking trendy coffees and lattes.

I assure you the logic does not escape me. This is why I said I support the idea of collapsing the redundant sub-forums under parent forums, i.e. a 5XXX forum, a 3XXX forum, et al.

I'm not saying we do. I'm saying, based on my experience in moderating other forums, posters very frequently, often very vociferously and *specifically* that discrete sub-forums be set up. I don't pretend to understand why, but the job of an Admin/Mod is, generally, to keep the peace. So admins and mods, generally speaking, do what's asked of those they moderate and I think that is pretty much what has happened here.

I just look at the unread posts and take it from there. I can then read the posts that I find interesting or relevant. But this forum is amazingly specific, more so than any other forum I visit, that I do wonder if it should have all these subsections.
Surely they could be condensed without being detrimental to the model.
