I gave up trying to buy a 35-70 2.8 nikkor via auctions, and went right to a online store selling used lens. Hard to believe but the prices are better than what people are willing to pay on auctions.

I ended up buying a Excellent condition (8/10) with no fungus/dust/etc for 356 dollars which is a savings of more than 200 dollars from the auction price of similar quality..

Lens is coming over from Japan,, so, it will take a while to arrive, but I am not in a rush,, Once it shows up,, I'll ebay my worn copy for maybe 100 dollars but one never knows what one gets.

So,, the delta will be around 250 dollars, which is not bad for replacing a gem of a lens.
