Request for access to formalised 'tog learning, please.

Hey Guys,

I'm going to cut a long story short.

Pretty much, even though I have a degree, employers cannot look past my disability. I haven't worked in a while and it's getting beyond a joke.

My Old Dad has spent literally a massive portion of his life savings to buy me a camera and some kit (Nikon D3300). I have to say it's going well. I'm taking meaningful, thought-out pictures every day and learning lots. I'm treating this like a 9-5 job. This is make or break for me.

Even though I am reading lots and watching lots of videos I feel better if I'm learning from a 'structure'. It provides me with a clear path and also provides targets for me to hit as it were. It comes form my Uni learning, I guess.

Is there anyone who can lend me or allow me access to such a 'formalised' course, *please*? Things like the Fro Knows Photo disc is also good - *if* that is legal to do so. I'm not asking anyone to do anything that would be wrong. As I understand it, it is legal to treat discs like a library book, where one person can access it at any one time. I would post the disc back when done which would be quick as that is how I learn.

I have asked these learning providers but this has drawn a blank sadly.

Already I am providing photo-sets to people like me who cannot afford them. My aim is get get something of an income and always to do shots for people who can't afford it. Ironically, I think my niche is going to be within the extreme poverty/disability subset of society - I just feel so much passion there.

Can you help at all, please?

Thanks for your time to read me.
Kevin

Hi Weebee!

Yes, Indeedy I have! Thanks for the Heads-Up!

I've been through every link listed in the Learning/Education parts of this forum. While I cannot say I can recall every detail exactly, I will be going through all the stuff again very soon! (I saved all the stuff on to my Hard Drive for easy access!)

I do appreciate your help, Weebee, and Thanks again!

I'd suggest you look into Lynda (dot) com. The videos there are complete *courses*, often several hours in length, on various subjects. Things like composition, using flash, and so forth. If you really want to get good at this, you should consider taking classes in things like color/light theory, design, composition and even basic drawing. Classes at a local Junior College would be a good way to get access to classes like that. What separates the wheat from the chaff, in my opinion, is less technical than artistic.

Between sites like Adorama and youtube which have plenty of free tip/how-to videos and getting out and shooting, that should be enough to keep you moving for quite some time.

As I read your post, my main concern is basing a full time business such as photography and targeting low-income (or lower) clients. IMO this is a WANT type of business, not a NEED type of business for people. I do wish you well with your endeavor, just looking to make sure you are on the right path for the right reasons :)

I have the Fro's course as well as Evan Sharboneaus "photography Materclass"
Both are excellent but only go to the basics of getting out of auto and into manual.

I have learnt the most (by far) from Lynda.com. The first month was free - they are always running specials - and then I paid $9.99 per month for 2 months. You can get through a ton of their stuff in a day.

Then it is a matter of practicing and practicing.

Shoot, shoot, shoot.

Best of luck with your endeavour.

All brilliant points, thank you. I'll try and see how I can get into Lynda*com.

Carguy, I see your point and it was my brevity that made you think that way. Sorry! I'm learning photography to earn money form those that can afford it and doing work free of charge to those that can't afford it. I'm a strong believer in Karma and I will help where I can as a thank you to those who have helped me when I haven't been able to help myself (paying it forward, in a sense). Thanks for your business acumen - please don't ever stop!

Really there are such useful videos on youtube that you can access. All provide all the information you need to help you learn a bit more about photography. However you need to be able to apply what you learned into real situations. That is the only way you can really get to know how everything works.
I would also recommend watching along with Adorama, CreativeLive, Greg Cazillo, Tony Northrup, Matt Granger, B&H, FStoppers, Good Lights, Craig Beckta, Gavin Hoey, Mark Wallace, Joe McNally (a lot of his videos are breakdowns on how he creates the images, which can sometimes come in handy).
Maybe some of these series of videos can give you the insight you want. Get ready for hours of video watching.

Hi Skene,
Thanks! There's a few on there I haven't come across yet. I'll pop over right now and subscribe and download! Many thanks!

What about doing a course at a local college. You get to try your hand at all aspects with a tutor to help. Where my daughter studies they have a few studios and allow the students to borrow equipment. I intend going on a part time class there after Easter, to try to better my skills.
