D800 & Nikkor DX lenses?

I'm thinking about upgrading my D5100 to D800.
I have two lenses with D5100:
- 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II DX ED AF-S
- 35mm f/1.8G DX AF-S
I know that those two DX lenses I have, should work on D800, but they probably not as good for D800 as for D5100.
My question is - should I sell them alone with D5100 or keep all together, as a backup or 2-nd camera?
Hate to loose $300-600 on selling...

Hi Gene what happens is that the D800 can use all it's Fx image on a Dx lens but you get a black outline. Or you can set it to Dx crop or even slightly larger for the Dx lenses and get very good images. I am currently away at work so can't demonstrate this but hopefully someone can. I upgraded from a D80 to the D800 and kept a Dx lens which I am glad I did. I have been more than happy with this combination. Hope this helps.

It's up to you, the lenses you currently have will work fine on the D800 but it would be a little counterproductive in as much as you'll be converting your D800 into a D7000. As to Longstar's comment, you won't notice anything being cut, rather the image output will be a 15.6 mp image rather than a 36.5 mp image. If you can afford to purchase an FX lens or two along with the D800, that would be ideal but if you can't, no worries. Keep the lenses you currently have and save up for an FX lens in the future. But keep in mind that the extra resolution of the D800 is tough on lower quality lenses so be sure to aim for the best you can afford when considering a lens for the D800

Just a word of warning as I found out the hard way. If you hand your D800 over to someone to take a pic for you and it has a Dx lens on it they will cut your head off using the view finder. I turn it to live view now as many kept doing this. The lines in the view finder are apparent if you know to look for them but if you don't then yes things get cut off lol.
