I got all the info (thanks Scott) and it is saying I need an AC adapter, it's the only item on the req list that I do not think I have, do I need that to complete the update of the firmware?

Ummm I do not think you need an AC adapter just a fully charged battery.

Confirming the firmware version:

  1. Turn on the D800
  2. Press the MENU button and select Firmware Version from the setup menu. The camera's firmware version will be displayed.
  3. Turn off the D800
Basic Upgrade instructions: for detailed instructions, see pdf files below. Please read carefully before proceeding.

  1. Create a new folder with an appropriate name on your computer.
  2. Choose the correct download below for the computer system you are using, and save the download to the folder created in step 1.
  3. Run the downloaded file to create the folder titled D800Update, containing the following file: D800_0110.bin
  4. Format an approved memory card in the camera, then remove .
  5. Copy the D800_0110.bin file to the top level of the memory card using a memory card reader or similar device, do not copy the file into any folder on the memory card.
  6. Insert memory card into the cameras memory card slot, and switch on.
  7. Select Firmware Version from the setup menu and follow the instructions displayed to upgrade the camera's firmware.
  8. DO NOT switch off the camera at any time during the update, doing so may result in the need for service.
  9. After the upgrade is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.
  10. Check the cameras firmware version to be sure it completed.
  11. Format memory card in camera for use.
  12. * - Firmware updates can be performed for you at authorized Nikon service centers.

Hi Scott,

I did the upgrade and it said not to touch any buttons untill the update is done, I did follow instructions and started the update and the camera has just stopped showing anything on the screen, does that mean it is finished and safe to continue with step 9. ?

Took the chance and turned off camera and all is ok with the upgrade, thank you Scott for your help.
Sorry was busy at work, I am glad it worked out for you. Have you checked the firmware again?

Dumb question here...

After I update the firmware, will my memory cards currently in the camera (containing a couple hundred photos taken while the camera had the previous firmware version) still be usable (read and write) as-is, or do I have to reformat the card, thereby erasing everything on it?

Hi T-Man, what I did was do a grab of Scott Murray's instructions in this topic on page 1 and print that out and follow every step one at a time, it sounds like you missed step 4 format a card in the camera.

In your case I suggest you use a spare card to do the job and I see no reason why your old card would not work with your shots on it.

Scott may not come back in here as he solved my problem for me, maybe try a new topic post and ask your question there if he does not came back in here, he is usually very quick to help if he can.

Thanks, Wombat. Yes, I read all steps and understood that it's a good idea to use a spare formatted card for updating the firmware. I was specifically referring to his "step 11," where he said: "Format memory card in camera for use," which made me wonder if my existing cards with photos taken using the previous firmware version will still work without having to re-format following firmware update.

I don't think a firmware update will mean your already used card will not work, but why not be on the safe side and upload those shots to your computer or a dvd then then do the update with the new card then try you original cards with your shots on them, try should work, but they do not then you have your shots on computer or dvd.

Just my thoughts.
