Hi all,

So first post, i just moved from canon to the Nikon d800e, my first full frame with a 28-120 f3.5-5.6. Only has 8000 clicks and cost less than a 6d and 24-105.

So currently it is basically high end and still one of the best cameras out there

What i'm wondering is how long till it needs upgrading, its hard to guess i know, but surely after a while, there will be a better model with more dynamic range, lower noise etc etc.

How long do you think ill get out of it?

Cheers! :)

It will outlast your desire to own it. In five years, there will probably be bodies and sensors that can shoot ISO 128,000 and will look totally realistic. In two years, there will be a Nikon that shoots 4K video and costs less than your D800e. In three years, there will be a switchable internal IR filter (maybe digital and not physical), so you can shoot regular or IR on a whim. We will all want some new feature, even though our existing bodies will still do then what they can do today.

I shoot a D600. It does everything I want. There is a print on my wall that is 30 inches wide, and you cannot see any pixelation, even though the print is a crop from the original size. I will never print anything bigger than that, and yet I STILL WANT A D810!! I'm not even pushing what I have to its limits, but marketing and my own human weaknesses and envy make me want the newer better thing. So that's what's going to get you, not some limitation in your current gear.

Enjoy it!

Cheers for the comments. I do plan on keeping the d800e for 3 years atleast, now that im selling a few prints and doing some photo shoots for actual clients i will start investing into some good glass :D

Like the others have said, you have got a good camera in the D800.

Use the camera to its full potential and enjoy it :)

From a purely mechanical point of view, the shutter is rated for about 200,000 actuations or more. So it could take you a while to actually wear it out, unless you leave it triggering like a machine gun. You will likely get NAS before you wear it out ;)

I agree, time lapse will wear out a camera sooner, but for the most part, cameras last a long time. And don't forget, the shutter mech. can be replaced, so they have a pretty long life. A camera's potential lifespan usually is longer than our attraction to it.

Well, just to be a devil, I could say you should upgrade that D800 to a D810 right now. LOL. Hey, I've got a couple of D70 bodies that are something like ten years old, only 6 mp and min ISO of 200. Guess what? I still use them! Sure, my D7100 gets the most use these days, but don't worry about any "need" to upgrade.

Congrats on the new camera, and HAVE FUN!

I'm quite pleased with my choice, and I have no intention of upgrading to the D810 at all! The D800e does plenty without the need to out do it! Lol :) Besides there are lenses I need/want to go with this awesome Nikon to save up for later! :)
The Nikkor 200mm micro comes to mind! Lol :)
