BIG learning curve ahead

Today I become the proud owner of a nice shiney new D800 and 28-300 zoom... OK I had to hit 50 to get it, but there are some upsides to having a "big" birthday.

Looking for hints tips tricks settings that you owners found useful to know, or learned the hard way :)

This is a huge upgrade from my D5100 and am looking forward to my photography future.

Congratulations on your new acquisition :)
Not sure about hints & tips other than to say that you will have fun with it ... the resolution means that it is fairly unforgiving of bad technique as movement will be exaggerated more than with lesser cameras. On the plus side, the resolution will enable you to get some great detailed shots and crop easily when required.

Happy birthday Tracey, I've got until February until I hit fifty so you can call me young Geoff until then :)

As for your D800 congrats it's a great camera. If I had a single recommendation I would say to use the auto ISO whenever handholding and set it to the faster setting. If you then shoot in aperture priority mode it will set a shutter speed that is 1/2 x focal length. If you do that you'll get sharp handheld photos regardless of the rubbish you hear about the D800 elsewhere. You will find that ISO 3200 and even 6400 is pretty good if you clean it up.

Obviously if you use a tripod go full manual at ISO 100 and you will get stunning results.

Enjoy the camera.

Happy Birthday!

That is an awesome present - was it a selfie? :D
Nope the camera was bought by the hubby for me (I bought him a TAG watch for his, so he splashed out on something I really wanted for mine... note to self, next time I want an upgrade, I must buy him something really nice LOL)

Happy birthday Tracey!

Now post some pics! :D
By the time I got the camera, and the battery charged it was almost dark. Tonight when I get home from *ork I'm going to see if I can get a half-decent photo of ANYTHING :D

We are heading off to the Channel Islands for a short break next week, so I need to get used to it by then :)

One thing I learned already, is that this beastie sees much more dust/hairs etc on the objects you are taking photos of :) see exhibit A one of my grey hairs taking pride of place in my artificial flowers!

Quick play with the camera this evening and I managed a reasonable few shots. I think it will be fantastic when I get to use it outdoors.

To get the narrow DOF I was using F2.8 on my D5100, this was shot at 5.6 I think :)
