Geotag Photos

I downloaded this app Saturday to try out. I never before had thoughts given to geo tagging my photos, until the other day when I couldn't remember this one spot where I shot some birds a few weeks ago. Darn age thing sucks!
It is working great, but I tend to forget to turn it on. Also it is a little extra work adding the GPX file to the shots.
I was also looking at some hardware options which are more expensive of course, but a lot less hassle.

Do you guys like the hardware or the software option better for geo tagging?

So what about when you shoot your D800e? How do you geo tag? Do you remember where each shot was taken when you get home?
I dont Geo tag with my D800e and yes I do remember where each shot was taken ;) if I am in a new area I normally take a general photo of a sign or something that reminds me.

I use Geotag Photos Pro (is this the same you use?) and it comes with desktop software that tags photos automatically. The phone app uploads the track to the server and the desktop (or laptop in my case) reads it and tags the photos. Very easy to use, requires minimal effort.

But, just like you, I sometimes forget to turn it on.

Yes but I have the trial version. I still have one more free trip. I think I'll just buy the Pro version since it has the desktop app. It might be easier to tag than in LR.

The desktop app works great. All you need is to point it to the folder with your RAW files and click OK. It will do the rest. You don't have to copy any GPX files, you don't even have to tell it which trip it was. It does everything automatically.

I'm definitely buying the pro version then. Now I just need to remember to turn it on when I go out shooting.:)

My son bought me a gadget that sits on my hot shoe... seems to add the data automagically in camera. When I get home I will find out the name of the gadget if you wish.

I use the tiny Aokatec AK-G750. It runs from a small draw on the main camera battery (so you need to turn it on/off as well... or just unplug it from the body when you don't want it.) It was about $65 and I don't have to carry a phone or a laptop or buy any software, etc. In addition to the GPS it has a working compass that it tags in the photos.

I am leaning towards a hardware solution as well. Does it lock on the satellite signal pretty quick? I will go read some reviews. Thank you!

It locks on in about 3 minutes in my house. Much faster outside. It also goes into a low-power mode when the camera goes into sleep mode - where the light blinks once every 10 seconds. I'm not sure how "low" this low-power mode really is. I had a half-full battery in the late afternoon and forgot to turn the GPS off when I was done shooting for the day. The next morning the battery was nearly dead. That's the only annoyance I've had.

I think it tags elevation as well... I'll have to check to verify, but it's in the documentation. :)

Thank you for posting that! The Aokatec just may be the geo-tagging solution I've been looking for!

Wow. You guys are high tech. I just put my photo files in a folder with the name of the location I was shooting.

So does the GPS provide just coordinates, or does it give the name of the location? This may be something I should look in to.

Generally this is what I do as well... But when I go off the beaten path coordinates, typically, are the only sure fire way I have of finding an exact location again.

GPS provides coordinates only, maybe elevation information, but that's about it.

I must have tried every single different GPS option out there from wired, to plug-in, to bluetooth, to software. I particularly liked the Aokatec and Dawn Tech products (I've linked to my reviews). Great if you are using a single body. With my wife now using a J4 and me using either the D800E and/or one or two V2's, I wanted something that could record GPS data simultaneously. That has lead me to use software more often as described in this thread. The good thing is that there are plenty of options and price points.
