D750 Hot Shoe

Saw this on NikonRumors today...

Phottix: the Nikon D750 hot shoe has different dimensions than previous camera models | Nikon Rumors

...and it has me very curious about the compatibility of the D750 with other triggers. Not to mention that it also has me curious as to why they changed the dimensions (does anyone know if they are the same as the D810 - it would explain why these two cameras started shipping w/o the cover). I don't do a lot of flash work, but when I do I use Vello and Yongnuo triggers. I might need to do some tests today. I am bothered by the comment in the article that some Nikon SB units don't seem to work with the D750 as well. Obviously this can't be a widespread problem as I'm reading about wedding photographers switching to the D750 all the time and if triggers weren't working then there'd be an uproar. But it has me curious as to why Nikon would change it.

Any D750 owners experience anything like this?

You could bring the D7200 in to that question and perhaps the D5500 to ascertain when and if any changes first happened, doubt its a similar situation but we had trouble with 220 film in our Hassleblads finally got Kodak to admit the cutters had worn beyond acceptable tolerances,it took the engineering of a blad to pick up on it,our other roll film cameras where quiet happy with it.

If I remember well, my D3300 also had no hot shoe cover so it might have changed as early as that one and the D5300.

I'm sitting here comparing the D610 and D800 against it and the only thing I can come up with is there seems to be an extremely small difference in the gap at the front end of the rails. On the D610 and D800 the rails go almost hard against the plastic but there's definitely a little space on the D750. I suspect this allows the unit to move just a hair too far forward to make contact.

I think the hotshoe cover was just cheapness on Nikon's part - though they did start selling that $20 metal cover recently. LOL

I wonder what prompted the change in the D750 hotshoe to begin with?

The D750 is ergonomically different from every other Nikon I've owned and I suspect that change in design caused/facilitated the add'l gap at the top. I don't think it was necessarily intentional to leave the gap, it's just that the prism housing on the D750 sits slightly lower and there's a pronounced bump in the top to accommodate the hot shoe.

Here's a shot of the D610 (L), D750 (foreground) and D800 (R). You can see that the D800 hotshoe is fully embedded in the top, the D610 is raised slightly and the D750 is raised even more with a pronounced ridge running across the front.

I read this too but I have a Phottix Odin and a D750 but I haven't had any issues at all. SB-600 and Yongnuo 560 III have no issues either
