Damn You, Nikon!! (AKA: Horoscope Fish Goes Whole Hog)

Well I've been considering going full frame for some time now and I mean a looooong time. I was tempted when the D600 came out but it just didn't seem to be the camera for me. Then the oil spot issue broke and I watched one of our own struggle with getting the issue so much as acknowledged, much less repaired, by Nikon. That saga turned me away from the D600 for good. Then the D610 came along and I was, once again, sorely tempted. Still, something about it seemed off to me and I just wasn't feeling the love. My D7100 was rocking my world and I was able to ignore the FF "itch" for a little longer still.

Then those bastards at Nikon start leaking rumors of the D750. I followed the news closely and it seemed bad. Very bad... It was starting to sound like this could be the "it" camera for me. Then the reviews stared pouring in and I knew I was done for and that it was only a matter of time. The D750 appeared to be The Camera I Could Stick With For a Long Time; if Master at None the D750 was sounding like a real "Jack of All Trades" sort of rig, which really is just what I wanted. I haven't found my "voice" as a photographer so I don't want anything too subject-specific. Then I stumbled across an online deal I couldn't resist and, well... The FedEx man stopped by my place yesterday and I'm officially the proud owner of a brand new Nikon D750. I've updated some of the Menu settings but I haven't even taken her out for her maiden voyage yet. She's wearing an 85mm f/1.8G at the moment and I have a battery grip on order.

Next stop, I think, will be the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC to complement my small (but mighty!) arsenal of primes and with that I should be good to go.

Congrats, man! *JEALOUSY GOES HERE*

Still haven't really been HUGELY tempted by the FF world yet, as I'm in the same boat you just left... My Primal Beast rocks my world, but I still wouldn't mind one, and the D750 has taken the top spot on that "some day down the road" list, for now.

Good for you! I have had a chance to handle and it is a great camera. If I wasn't still in love with my D700/D300 combo I would be on this one!

Paired up with your D7100 there should be no photography task you can't dominate! What a combo D750/D7100!

Wow!!!

Good luck HF. I hope it serves you well.....just remember.....somewhere lurking in the deep dark tunnels of the box lies the most important piece of hardware the D750 has.....the Sony sensor! lol

Congrats, but you weakling did surrender to NAS.

I`m not to clear on subject-specific. I do understand that the D810 or a mid frame is more portrait or landscape oriented, then ???
I would call a D4s maybe a master of all, "Jack of All Trades", which is probably true for all the top line (except maybe DXx).
Similar for a Df, D6X0, D7X00, D5X00, D3X00.

All this said, I do not need a D750 when I evaluated it, still it will probably be the next Nikon I buy.

Let me know how the battery grip feels on the 750..Im assuming you ordered the Nikon one..Thanks..
Weeeeeeeeell... Not so much this time. I'm fortunate in that I have access to a huge market for used camera gear here at the college and just about anything I want to sell has an eager audience in the student body. I opted for a third-party grip (for $80) knowing that if it totally sucks, I won't have a hard time getting most of money back out of it on the used market. It's very liberating knowing I can experiment like this with little or no fiscal impact.

....
The Sony sensor meant they had to hold off on sending a hotshoe cover though... :D j/k
You know, it's funny because when I saw the naked HS, I *was* a little miffed... It just seems like such a trifle to overlook but I don't want to ignite THAT firestorm of controversy; as I'm sure you don't, either. :D

So yeah... I've ordered a couple HS covers from Amazon already, along with a replacement viewfinder eye-piece (thankfully the '7100 uses the exact same part) because I'm bound to lose a few of those as well.

Don't know about a D4S, but I wouldn't call a D4 a master of all trades. There are times i really miss my D800, and i'm itching to order a D810 to replace it. If you could combine the D4 and the D800, (or D4S and D810?) then you would have a true master of all trades camera

Muchos congratulations! Sounds like a very good buy. We wanna see them images now!

Do you have a plan for what you wanna shoot? Since you are talking about 85 and 70-200 mm zoom? Or are your primes filling up the rest of the spectrum?

OK so I am sort of jealous but this is tempered with the knowledge that I am way off ready for one.
Really looking forward to the photos though Fish so get them on here mate.

It seems odd, to me, to congratulate someone on a purchase. Congratulations are for an achievement. You may as well say "Wow, good job getting all that money together to spend!" and congratulate his career or investment choices.

Then again, in America, buying is mandatory, as is celebrating your purchase.

I'm more curious as to what prompted the purchase... and good luck with the camera.

Why wouldn't you praise someone for working hard and saving up for something he wants?

I have no respect for people who sit on their ass and expect others to provide for their needs or wants.
Good for you Fish!
