I am looking on possibly getting a D7200 with the 18-140 lens. Of all the Nikon lenses I want to get some primes and log zoom lenses. Am I limited to just the DX lenses only or can the FX lenses work with no problem. I do not see in there catalog any long primes or zooms in DX format. I want an APSC format camera and want to get some long lenses in Nikon if possible. Feedback appreciated Bill

Welcome to the forum.

I have a D7100 and the 18-140 was my favorite lens for it. I also have a 70-300 which is a FX lens that I use on both the D7100 and my D750 which is a FX camera. I also have a Tamron 150-600 which is a FX lens and it works great on my D7100. On DX it becomes a 225-900 zoom.

Thanks gentlemen. I am looking at the 80-400 and also a 300mm prime. This solves a lot of problems.. Thanks again Bill

I also have the 80 400 on my 7200. Absolute magnificent lens.

In fact I prefer the fx lenses and of my 5 lenses only one is a dx lens.

I haven't used the 80-400mm but have read quite a bit about it and seen a fair few unhappy customers. It seems to me that the 200-500mm f/5.6 which I own is much more universally well liked. It is sharp at 500mm wide open and everywhere else through its focal range. I have also seen a fair few comparisons between it and the new 300mm f/4. The 300mm is sharper without a TC and much smaller but if you plan on using a 1.4TC with the 300mm, the 200-500mm will out perform it.

If I were you I'd buy the 200-500mm, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for all the feedback it is greatly appreciated. There is a good lens selection from Nikon. I am moving from Canon to Nikon. I have had 4 Canon cameras. Years ago I had a Nikormat 35 mm camera in Germany and really liked it and it took great pictures. I think its time to go back to Nikon especially for there glass. I will look at the 200-500 also. For sure I will be getting a 300mm lens also. I have used a TC before and had good luck with them. I am not opposed to using one again.
Do you guys use UV or clear filters on your lenses? I usually use them in heavy wind or at a sandy area. Thanks again. Bill

I have two 18-140 and it is the "best" zoom for the 71/7200 (DXO) both the 18-200 and 300 are horrible .. if you need a bit more reach just crop its no problem .
Make sure you have the fine focus adjust dead on mine seem to need - 5

FWIW, I have read and heard that the Tamron 16-300 is a pretty good lens as well....haven't tried it yet myself in full disclosure.

Greetings from Oregon, Bill. Nice to have you with us.

I just returned from an 8-day trip to Utah canyon country. I tool three lenses along and used the 18-140mm lens 95% of the time, with very nice results. It's a wonderful, all-purpose lens, in my view.

Yes the 18-140 will be my walk around lens. I am also getting the latest model 70-300 also. With the crop factor that 70-300 should be a pretty good lens. Later next year I may get the 200-500 Nikon lens. Have to wait and see. Thanks Bill
