Memory Cards

My hoped for price drop on the D7200 hasn't happened yet, but places are starting to include freebies to entice buyers. My question is what size memory cards would be best to use. The cheapest package I've seen comes with a 16GB card, but I don't know if that's enough. Then they also have 16GB and 32GB packages that also come with a spare battery.

Either way I'd be buying 2nd card, so what sizes should I be looking for?

Most people will suggest 16GB's. I use 32's, personally, but could get by with 16's if I had to. I shoot in RAW only and use the second card as "Backup" to the first, alleviating the "too many eggs in one basket" problem that many feel plagues those who use 32GB cards. Really, it's just a matter of personal preference.

I will tell you to stick to well known brands when it comes to both SD cards and batteries. The cheap, no-name, off-brand junk so often bundled in with higher ticket items are a fast-track to frustration, I assure you.

Thanks for the info. I couldn't agree more on the cards. The kit I'm looking at includes class 10 Lexar cards, so that should be good. So the question is whether it's worth the extra $50 to go from the 16 GB to 32 GB plus the extra battery.

Do both the cards need to be the same capacity, or could I use one 16 GB and one 32? In a lot of cases I would shoot RAW+Jpeg.

Lexar is good stuff, that's good. As for your configuration that really depends on how YOU want to set things up. To answer your question, yes... You could use the smaller card for JPG's if you wanted... I'm not really sure one way is better than another when it comes to this sort of thing, I just like consistency so I have nothing but 32's laying around. I would suggest you have at LEAST two sets of cards (meaning a minimum of four total).

Depends. For everyday shooting, theres always a Sandisk Extreme Pro 16gb SD in the slot. If i'm out at an airshow its a Sandisk Extreme Pro 64gb SD, and either 32 or 64gb CF in the other slot.

32GB is fine IMO. you could do 16 as well.if you should raw, then the line is a bit thinbetween 16-32.

in the link above the best choices are either the sandisk or the kingston.

Review: SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s 32GB SDHC UHS-I Memory Card - Camera Memory Speed Comparison & Performance tests for SD and CF cards

Kingston UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) 32GB SDHC Memory Card 90MB/s 80MB/s Review - Camera Memory Speed Comparison & Performance tests for SD and CF cards

When Ill get my d750 Ill get the kingston. I had the transcend 32gb 600x (red) and they were lightning fast so the kingston should be a winner since theyre faster. a well known company thats been around for so long and offer excellent pc hardware and excellent CS so will go with them without hesitation. $8 less per card and ill need 6 cards and thats adds up.

I use 2x 16gb cards. I've never filled one up let alone 2 in a days shooting and I take plenty of shots ( all RAW). I don't store my shots on the SD card, instead I download then to a hard drive ASAP, so that is always going to be a consideration when choosing card size.

You should consider signing up for B&H's and Adorama's news letters. Last year Adorama sent out an email with items that were discounted. One of the items was a Lexar 32GB 600x Class 10 SDHC card for $16.95. For people who bought several, the price was $1 less per card ($15.95 each). Excellent cards. :) Right now Adorama is listing them at a closeout price of $22.95 each.

From time to time, cards will fail so keep them in mind when you make your choice. Do you want to spend a lot of money for an expensive card, or can you get by with smaller, less expensive cards?

price has little to do with quality of a card. buy from a reputable brand and its the same in reliability. one is not more reliable than the other in the major brands.

I had a transcend card go MIA and I had a sandisk extreme card go MIA. I dont know how defective they were. I just didnt take a chance. the second they hiccuped when copying files over was the moment I filed rma. they all have lifetime warranty. any top end name brand has an RMA process to replace your cards.

you can go cheap or expensive. stick by a known name brand and youll have the same chance with any.

when sandisk had their extreme series years back they were the fastest by a huge margin . today the par is so small with performance. the par in price though, is significant. then it was worthwhile to pay for sandsik, today the difference is minor.

I use two 64GB in the one cam, one 64 in the other (and a 16GB CF). Blue Transcends. Never had any issue with any of them.

I use them as a temporary medium only. They are not in my cam to store photos; they're there to hold them until I get to my computer.

Well crud. Amazon is out of stock on the D7200 until Friday (I think they had them last night, but I spent too much time researching the memory cards with all that good info you guys gave me). I had identified a couple 16GB cards I was going to get with the camera, but am now thinking about a package from Adorama that comes with a 16 GB card. Does it matter what the 2nd card it? I'm assuming I can go with a different brand and even size if I want to get a 32 DB card to add to it, right?

It looks like the one from Adorama comes with a good card (SanDisk Class 10 Ultra SDHC UHS-I 30 MB/s Read speed), but the one I'm looking at on Amazon I think is a bit faster (but also a SanDisk). If I went with the Adorama package I'd probably get the 32 GB card to go with it. I just want to make sure I won't cause any issues in mixing them and wouldn't be better off just waiting until Friday.
