Executive Summary Version: Auto-focus sensor-points come in two flavors: Vertical and Cross-type. Vertical sensors determine focus by evaluating contrast along a vertical line. Cross-type focus points measure contrast along a vertical AND horizontal axis, making them more accurate than the Vertical type. The more Cross-type focus points you have, the better. The D7100 has a total of 51 Auto-focus points, 15 of which are the more-desirable "Cross-type".
