On four occasions now i have had this set up refuse to focus,it doesn't hunt and its not lack of contrast, just does not react to the shutter button being pressed, cant just return them as they are from different manufactures so just wondered if any one had had this problem with one of these items.
I dont have another camera to try the lens with so can only try another lens on the D7100,this i will do but thought i would ask as it may be a while before the problem shows up.

Mike there is a firmware upgrade for this from what I am aware but it means sending it off, mine does it every now and then but I make do.

I've experienced it before as well. When I looked into it I found a smattering of issues all over the net. It's happened a handful of times but not for a long time. I typically have to turn off the D7100, take off the lens and put it back on. I think I noticed it happening when focusing below 20ft and then trying to get out to infinite.

I never gave it much thought but now you mention it, I recall during one of my last shoots me pressing the button but it not responding. It made me wonder but the next time it worked normally so I assumed it was me. It's possible I switched off the cam in between, I can't remember that.

It only happened once as far as I can recall. It's still possible I did something wrong or had limited focus enabled.

On todays occasions i didnt switch any thing off just pressed the button two or three times and it worked,so it could be the same for you

It's possible, all I know for certain is that it wasn't normal. Even when using limited focus, thinking about it, if it couldn't get focus on the one end, you'd expect it to go to the other. But it only happened once this far so it might even have been the weather. Even my D3300 and D750 had occasions when buttons didn't respond.

The only time I had any trouble with mine is when I forget that the focus limiting switch on the lens is activated and i try and focus on something at a shorter distance. Other than forgetting the switch is turned on, I have had zero problems.

It happened to me a couple of times, I just thought I was to close to the subject since it worked fine when I focused in a different spot further away.

I also experienced occasional failures to focus, when I still had my Tamron. It happens also, from time to time, with my new Sigma 150-600. In every instance, I chalked it up using a big, f/6.3 lens in situations with less than ideal contrast ranges. On my Sigma, I've taken to using the "MO" focus mode, which allows me to easily override the autofocus system when it decides to take a break.

Re: Tamron 150-600 Nikon mount auto focus problem:: Third Party Lens Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Tamron 150-600 AF sometime stops working: Nikon SLR Lens Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Quite a bit about this problem on DPR. Seems like a communication problem (obviously). Quick fix is to turn the lens a bit, as if you were taking it off, and then lock it back into place. I would contact Tamron about it.

I do not own the Lens, but I quickly looked thru the comments made on DP Review and it seems it is spread across the Nikon Line the 7000, 7100, 610 all are have intermittent problems with this lens. This tends to lead me in the way of thinking that this ball is in Tamrons court. Either the contacts are not always lining up, or it is slipping ever so slightly.

But this is just a guess..

I don't have that lens, but I've had my AF/MF switches get bumped into a kind of half-way area, which was just enough to switch my camera into MF mode. Check all your AF/MF and focus-limit switches (body and lens).

Next thing is to contact Tamron.

I have also had it happen. I just turn the camera off and it works fine when I turn it on again. Only happens occasionally so I am not worried about it.

Taking this a step further ime now wondering if its a camera fault,it locked up today and i kept dabbing the shutter button and it came back, again i didnt give it a thought and carried on,a short while later it did it again this time it wouldn't come back.I tried switching the lens to manual focus and taking a picture, tried switching the camera off and on a couple of times, still no luck.Because it played up more this time i had chance to look at the camera more and the green card write light was on and stayed on until i pulled the battery and replaced it,the camera worked perfectly after that.
Ime using a sandisk extreme pro but obviously will use another card for a while to check its not the card.
When i got back today i had two black frames that coincided with the first lock up,there is an image on them but its well underexposed and the exif has recorded the shutter speed but not the F stop so this points it back to a communication error between the lens and camera.

This is one of the black shots as is and after PP.
