Third party flashes vs. SB700 / SB910

Hello everyone!

Could you share your opinions on using non-branded flashes like Yongnuo YN560 or Meike MK910 or other brands if any and compare their options/settings/possibilities?

I am thinking about buying one as an external for camera itself and two more for studio strobes and don't feel like spending a fortune buying SB700 or SB910 which is even worse.

Any constructive input will be greatly appreciated.

I had the Nikon SB-700 flash and always said it was idiot proof. Great flash, but a little on the pricey side. Sold it and bought 2 Yongnuo flashes....one YN565EX and one YN560 III. I'll never go back to Nikon flashes! I'm even looking at getting two more YN560 III's and the YN560TX to control them all. They're that good! :)

I love the YN560 III and the YN 560 TX. I have 4 of the flashes and I can group all of them together or separate with the TX.

I have Yongnuo 468 II, and my friend have SB800, we were together shooting some wedding, and I did not notice any difference in our photos. On paper my flash charges little bit slower, it is not as powerful, but in practice it is good enough compared to SB800, and build quality is very good.

I went with the Nissin Di-866 Mark II from B&H. The first one became defective after a few days of use. It wouldn't sync-up properly with the camera. B&H sent a replacement out right away and the second one is working fine. I've had it about a year now; no issues. It was probably just a one-off.

I think it's comparable to the SB900 series. It has both RF and optical sensors. Really nice, easy to navigate lcd menus. I would buy another one, if I needed another pro speed-light.

One thing I especially like is that has a front "fill-flash", which you don't see that often anymore. You can turn it on or off in the menu.

I've heard good things about YungNuo flashes, but haven't used them yet. Definitely quite a bit cheaper than Nikon models.

The only caveats I've picked up on with
YungNuo is to ensure you're aware of any warranty or stipulations, and understand if you want TTL or HSS as not all models will support all features.

I have a Yongnuo YN-560 II that I use as additional "slave" lighting. I either trigger it using the optical sensor or use the pc-sync port with a cable. It's a good slave flash. Doesn't have i-TTL, but I use my Nissin for i-TTL work.

Nissin Di-866 Mark II cost $350.. For that kinda money I would stick with Nikon.
