Switched Tamron's

Ok so from my other thread you can see that I originally bought the 18-270 Tamron, and I took it back today. Now it's not that it's a bad lens, it just was not for me and what I want. It is a great lens if you are driving down the highway looking a attractions and need a do everything to capture the moment. So I ended up springing the extra and got the 17-50 2.8 VC. Now let me say off the bat cause I am sure it has been said, yes it has a noisy autofocus, and yes their is a slight jitter when the VC motor kicks on, but as long as you're not shooting sports and don't mind a 1/8 sec jitter when you focus because you are composing a shot this is a great lens. It literally kicks the crap out of the 18-270 when it comes to being crisp, as well as any kit lens I have tried. This thing gathers so much light even at comparable apertures to the 18-270, and this being my first fixed aperture lens it is so nice not having to worry about having to change shutter speed because when you zoomed 5mm your f3.5 went to f4 or something. I almost pulled the trigger on a Sigma 18-70 2.8-4 but I really wanted that fixed 2.8 and I'm not at the point skill or money wise to afford the $1800 24-70:frown-new: someday. Anyways when I got home just now all I had time to do before a storm was rolling in was take this shot of a fence next to my place, one at f2.8 the other at f8.

That lens on a 7100 is as sharp as anything I get on my D800. I've never noticed it being particularly noisy or delays in the VC, but I don't use it much as it belongs to my wife.

Ya I'm pretty happy so far, but I have learned something in the last two days. I need to stop reading reviews and DxO mark scores and just go out and shoot. I don't want to get wrapped up in the nick picky things and loose sight of making good pics. Sounds impossible, but I am going to try.

Congrats on the new lens. I had a Nikon 18-200 for my D7000 and it was a very nice all-purpose lens, but it was no match for my 17-55 2.8 when it came to picture quality. Two different lenses for two different situations. I sold all my DX lenses when I bought a D600 and miss having a superzoom once in a while. So now I have to carry a backpack if I want to cover 14-200. But 2.8 glass makes it worth changing lenses.

Happy Shooting.
