File Names/Numbers

Ok, this has been fine until today..... my sequence has been DSC_XXXX... No problems. Today as I downloaded from the camera (and this likely applies to most other Nikon models) I rolled over DSC_9999 and the next photo is DSC_0001. I can see where I will accumulate files with the same name/number, in fact likely already have. My photo's are in dated folders so that is not an issue but if I create a folder of favorites it could/would be.

Just curious how others deal with this situation as I am sure many have shot way more than me...

Thanks,

Checked my D3300 manual. Numbers roll over after 9999, so I also will face the same problem (I am on 8929, after 4.5 months). For my Nokia camera I had written a small code in "C" which could renumber the Images, so I guess I will now have to write another program to renumber the NEF files.
DSC_XXXX.NEF to DSC_YYYXXX.NEF, where YYY will be user input number/alphabet (yet to decide).

Normally my shots get copied to a new folder I create for them. The folder gets a descriptive title and the date the shots were taken. Something like "Wild Animal Park - July 2014" for example. Once the files are in the folder, I use Windows Explorer to batch-rename the files with the same title as the folder they're in. Explorer automatically sequences them with a number for me. Hence DSC_1000, DSC_1001, DSC_1002, etc. become (for example) "Wild Animal Park - 29 July 2014 (1)", "Wild Animal Park - 29 July 2014 (2)", "Wild Animal Park - 29 July 2014 (3)", etc.

To do this on a PC you just have to do Ctrl+A to select all the photos in the folder, right-click on one photo in the selection and rename it; Windows Explorer will automatically sequence the entire selection by appending the "(x)" to the file name. I find this quick and easy and it requires no additional software. I'm sure Macs can do this too, but I'm a PC guy.

I changed "DSC" into "1MG", where MG are my initials. When I reach the limit of 9999, I intend to increment the prefix to "2MG" and then "3MG' and so on. Darrell Young suggested this approach in his book and I adopted it.

I've got 4 bodies that I can use at any point, so each has a 3 character prefix...

D800 - 'D8n'
D600- 'D6n'
D7100 - 'D7n'
D7000 (IR Conversion) - 'IRn'

...where 'n' starts at 0 and gets incremented with each rollover. This way I can't get filename collisions across cameras.

Fish, thanks! That is a great way.... I file by date (a months files in a folder unless it is a special event.) I think for my formats, Felisek and Jake have the methods that fit me best. I absolutely do appreciate your response!!!

Jake, several similar and I am going with yours as I have 2 camera bodies and have already experienced the cross collisions.! Thanks to you and all that made suggestions. I will be implementing that today!

Read the manual

In my D7100: Shooting menu -> File naming. Must be similar in your cameras.

This option is not there in the D3300. The only option is to change the file directory name. I guess Nikon has disabled a lot of goodies along with gizmos in the D3xxx series bodies.

Hey Pat: I detailed out in an old thread my file handling. The thread was from 4 years ago and I still follow pretty much the same approach. Might give you some additional ideas?
