My New D7100

I got my D7100 three weeks ago and until last week, hardly touched it. Well, last week I was able to use it two nights for about 200 shots total, and I was not happy with the results at all. Everything I shot, with both Nikkor 28mm f1.8 (handheld) and Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 VR2 (monopod), was soft. So today, I went out and worked with the AF Adjust function of the camera, and lo-and-behold, with the 70-200, the factory setting (0) was very soft compared to the -18 and -17 settings. So now, that lens is saved to -18 and I'm going to do the same checkout for every lens that I have, in between testing it on some "real" photographs.

Lessons learned: do my homework before showing up for the test.

I'm going to try this with some of my lenses as well, but I read that it is much harder to accomplish with a zoom then with a prime.

I just worked on my 70-200 at the 200 mm end because that's where most of my shooting with it is done. I'll look at the other end (70 mm) later, as well as mid range to see where it's at. I'm sure it's easier to get this done for a prime than a zoom, but hopefully the AF Focus Adjust will be close over the entire range of the lens.

I'm not going to upgrade - ever!
This sounds far too technical for me.
Congrats on the new toy Whiskey fella ...

No need to not upgrade, and it's really not that technical. In fact, there is a computer peripheral and software package that helps with this.

When I was down in South Florida in June, I met a photographer who does this for pay on the side. He was at the refuge returning a camera and lens to a repeat client, so at least one person seems to be happy with what he does. I believe he said he charges $50 US for a prime lens/single camera combination and close to twice that for a zoom.

Anyway, I'm hoping that I'll see an improvement in my images now that I've done this. If they turn out worse, I'll just return the setting back to 0!

I find most Nikon and 3rd party lenses need tuning and vary between my 7100 bodies and my D800; all three are different.

Geoff, I believe that someone indicated that you've done some autofocus calibration with tele-converters, as well. If so, can you offer any advice or points of information about autofocus adjustment with them?

Hi WM have a look at this and ask if you have any questions.

I've noticed, with my moon shots, that AF need a little manual bump/tweak to lock it in, so probably need to do this myself, soon.

Hmmm after watching the first video link my buddy HF posted, it seems hard in some ways and easy in other ways. But it seems like something I better learn, to get the best shots I can. Seems that I need a chart, and then a way to measure out the precise distance from the lens to chart. But on a good note, maybe this will help my nikkor AF 28mm get sharper! Lol :)

Thank you HF for pointing the way toward help and answers! You rock buddy! :D
