I have the d7100
With an 18-105
I tend never to have the lens hood on
Do members find that using one improves the picture or just in certain conditions

Why dont you use it,ime old school and was brought up to use it especially out side to help reduce flare ,if nothing else it can offer a bit of physical protection

The only lense hood I use is the one that came with the 35mm F1.8 DX. I do not use one with the kit 18-55 or with the 50mm F1.8 AF. Lense hood does help in certain situations, especially with stray sunlight hitting the front element and producing flare. As you go wider the depth of the hood becomes shallower and after one point you have to use the petal shaped hood, which helps in some cases and does not if the sun shines through the kink in the petal.

That said, a hood gives you protection from damage due to vertical fall.

One argument for using is the manufacturers will do any thing to save money yet they still include one,if it wasn't needed they would soon leave it out, there will be times when its no help but will you spot those times before returning to the computer with job done.
Modern coatings and PP opportunities may help but if its not hurting the picture why not use it.

They include with some lenses and not with others. What I have noticed is that if the front element is recessed as in my 50mm F1.8 AF, there is no hood supplied, while if the lense is in front as in the 35mm F1.8 DX the hood is supplied.

I always use the hoods unless I have some type of filter attached that makes it impossible. (like a square filter holder) Olympus sells some of their lenses without the hood and then you have to pay extra to purchase them (and they are overpriced). Stupid approach IMHO.

They do help prevent lens flare, and while some lenses are are more prone to flaring, I don't think any lens is immune from it. So yeah, I use them pretty much anytime I'm shooting in sunlight. They also provide some physical protection for the front lens-element.

Of all the lens hoods that my lenses came with, the least effective is the hood for the Nikon 16-35mm f4 VR lens. However, its superior flare resistance makes up for it even when pointed directly to the sun.

I use the lens hood on all my lenses inside or out. Stops flare and helps protect the front element as I don't use a protective front filter except on the 200-400, which has one attached.
But in my mind the most useless one is on my 24-120 f4. So thin in profile it's useless

The other advabtage for the lens hood to prevent damage to the front element. Im on the dance floor and you get elbowed quite a few time throughout the evening. Besides this i also keep it on because if the lens were to fall to the floor theres a good chance the hood will deflect the damage. Even if its on its side , the hood is usually wider than the body and it will help to absorb impact. Hood on no matter what situation. flare is tge least of my worries. I like flare in my pics in many outdoor shoots.

Yup...lens hood on.

The worst hood I have is the one on my 28-105. Man that thing is big and wide! :) Hate it!

Lens hoods are chick magnets, but besides that they do protect the lens somewhat from bumps. My hood saved my lens yesterday from a bump against the dashboard of my car, not hard enough to do any damage though.:)

I find that I get more babes when I'm using the tulip hood.

AHHH! the sombrero hood. thats the name it was given years back. I love that lens. such a forgotten lens. still relevant today imo.

Wow yesterday was just a terrible wedding. they were barbarians dancing and I got hit so many times. like in this trance like a cult. lucky for the lens hood. I couldnt get inthe middle of the dance floor. they were running around in circles and I couldnt get in. it was like a war zone.

one guy spun the groom so hard, he twisted his leg badly and practically passed out. not kidding. he was limping the whole time. hardly danced. after the spinning, he pretty much fell to the floor and they picked him up and put him on the chair to relax. groom was so stressed. poor guy. I felt so bad for him.
