Simply put you are going to have to decide: Macro or zoom and how much you want to spend.

There's not much point in discussing it until you can pin down those two things.

I was using the Tamron tonight and it's very good. It's actually my wife's and she has given me the green light to get the Nikon 105 but I'm not sure it's worth it if I can borrow this. Interestingly it doesn't seem to vignette on my D800 either.

I was thinking about purchasing the 105mm macro Nikkor, but I think I've decided on the 90mm macro Tamron. My friend has the 90mm macro Tamron on a Canon 6D and it is an amazing quality lens. Having used the Nikkor 105mm macro for about a week I've personal decided that I'll save the 400 dollars and get the Tamron. Just my 2 cents.

I have the Tamron. Hard to go past if your on a budget. Another plus is its actually a very good portrait lens as well.

I agree. I also personally like it better then all the other third party offerings. The 40mm micro Nikkor is cheap and a great macro lens also, but for insects and stuff it's hard because you have to get real close.
