I just took these images last night using the intervalometer on my D7000. Considering it was my first try at star trails I think it worked better than expected. It took a few test shots to get the settings right.

so much Fun,, Intervalometer are not that expensive, maybe another item for the kit. now you have to hike and find some interesting background like a nice tree, or barn, maybe a mountain peak, how about the ocean?

I used an iPad app called Skywatch to locate the North Star (Polaris) and then I setup my tripod to point directly at it.

I set the camera up for shutter priority and set it for 30'. ISO was 100 and I was using the 18-105mm kit lens at 18mm and f6.3. Turned off AF and manually focused on a faint star.

I set the interval timer to start at 21:30 (9:30PM). The interval is set at 34 seconds. And the last setting, "intervals x no. of shots =" I set it so that it looked like this 200 x 1 = 200. Basically 200 snaps at 34' intervals. I found it worked perfectly to set the interval at 34' when the shutter priority was set to 30'.

It took about 2 hours.
