I just ordered this today. Had great reviews and was reasonably priced. Can anyone comment if it's more than a glorified user manual?

This one right?

It looks like it has some pretty good reviews on Amazon, although this is said in one of them:
This book was fine, but not great. I'm not sure exactly what I expected. I'm the kind of person who reads the manual pretty much cover-to-cover, and I found most of this book redundant with the manual, despite the author's protestations to the contrary. While the explanations in this book are more complete in that they provide more context than the manual does, I mostly just found them extremely verbose. For legitimately complex settings like flash sync speed, I didn't actually understand his explanations (and I'm not sure he did either). And while he claims to cover not just what various settings do but also when you'd use them, there were few useful suggestions for the things I was interested in (admittedly somewhat arcane stuff, like focus point selection modes).

Curious Willie how did you like the book? I just ordered this on recommendation a few days ago. Is there another that you have found since that you liked better?

I absolutely love the book. One other book I can highly recommend is "Understanding Exposure" 3rd edition by Bryan Peterson. Those 2 books are great together.

Wonderful! I am glad to hear that:eek: I am looking forward to reading it. I saw the other book Understanding exposure on Amazon while I was shopping. I will have to add that one to my wish list of books to get. Thanks for the recommendation.

How do you like the book so far?

Well i've read David Busch's 'manual' for the D5100 & i was pissed off to say the least.
The book is so horrible (am sorry) that it looks as if the D7000 book was just copied for the D5100 with the word 'D7000' replaced by 'D5100' all over the place.
There are references to functions in the D5100 book which are only available on the D7000.
i mean, come on, i understand everyone wants to make money, but i don't think this is the way to do it.
david busch's books are quite famous & a lot of new folks rely on them & you would imagine he (or his publishers) would take some time if not to write a new book at least to edit it and make it free of these errors.

i will never buy anything from him ever & would not recommend it to anyone.
it's much better to learn from a teacher than from a businessman.

on the other hand, Rob Sylvan's 'from snapshots to great shots' & bryan peterson's 'understanding exposure' & 'how to see creatively' are totally amazing books & almost a must read.

just my 2 cents

I agree 100% and even returned mine and got my money back. I personally like Darrel Young's book. It's by far a more in depth book and actually has personally recommendations on which the author likes and does not like. The David Buschs books are very "cut and paste" and seem to have one template and they simply replace the numbers after the "D". But again, this is merely my own personal opinion, others may feel differently and I respect that.

Well this is the first one I've ever read so I can't comment on whether it's "cut and paste".

once you are done, see if you can get your hands on the D5100 version of the book & you'll immediately know what i mean :)
you won't even have to spend too much time reading the entire book, cos you already have!

I just bought the book by Darrell Young on my Kindle - so far I love it, would highly recommend! He goes into detail but without it sounding like you've just bought an extra manual. Its like someone is sat with you going over every single button and function on your camera... what can be done with it and how & why they use/recommend it.

I also have the above mentioned books by Bryan Peterson and I've recommended those to many people before.

Was looking at the 'snap shots to great shots' one also... just might check it out once I get through 'mastering the Nikon D7000'
