Some Gymnastics Shots with the D7000

Still learning my way around this camera. Here are a few from Sunday's Gymnastics meet. For those that have shot gymnastics before, you know how difficult it can be - no flash or AF assist beam allowed, lights are usually crappy, and you don't have access to the floor so you're shooting from far away in the stands.

Anyway, full gallery can be seen here. Following are a few highlights.

All shots are from D7000 with AF-S 70-200 f/2.8 VRII, most at 1/500 ISO 3200 f/2.8. For the most part these are SOOC, although I did run through LR3 for cropping and some light exposure adjustments here and there. All EXIF info is retained if you want the details.

How is it that you shot in Shutter Priority, and your ISO and f/stop stay the same, but your shutter speed is adjusting in every shot? I am not criticizing, just trying to understand how that happened?

Simple. I bumped the command dial so a series of shots were at 1/800, but I usually try to shoot all my gymnastics at 1/500. ISO stays the same because I don't use auto-ISO - I manually set it at 3200. F-stop stays the same because the lighting conditions are actually underexposed (no flash allowed in gymnastics, and gyms are dark) so the camera is as wide as my lens will go based on its meter. So by shooting in Shutter Priority I keep out the blur even if photos are slightly underexposed.

Was also going to mention that the EXIF data is intact on my photos, so you can see the other details if interested. I enjoy shooting gymnastics now that I've figured out how to get decent shots.

Thanks for this. Daughter's competitive team has a regional competition next month and I,simply lacking the time ability to go and practice, was leaning towards keeping the camera in auto so I wouldn't miss anything. The data is very helpful

Adam, great job! I also looked at your web location to see the balance of them. Conditions seemed good at ISO 3200!
