Nikon has just introduced their new D7000 16.2 MP DX format DSLR.

Nikon’s D7000 features a 16.2 MP DX-format CMOS sensor, 6 fps continuous shooting and breathtaking Full 1080p HD Movies with full time autofocus

I wonder what this will do for D300S sales. A review of the specs would indicate that the new D7000 equals, or beats the D300S in most areas. The only features that I see that the D300S has over the D7000 are:

PC terminal for use with studio strobes (No PC terminal on D7000)
51-point AF system with 15 cross type sensors (D7000 - 39 point with 9 cross type)
Max of 8 fps (D7000 max 6 fps)
Image comment & copyright can be inserted into image EXIF (not present on D7000)
Uses compact flash cards which most pros already have (D7000 uses SD cards)
Uncompressed or lossless compressed or compressed 12, or 14-bit NEF (D7000 lossless compressed or compressed 12, or 14-bit NEF)

There may be others, but these are what I noticed.

The D7000 beats the D300S in the following:

Resolution: 16.2 vs. 12.3
ISO: 100-6400 (D300S, 200-3200)
Video: 1920x1080 (D300S 1280x720)
Battery life: 1050 (D300S 950)

Many features are the same for both:

Magnesium alloy chassis with weather resistant sealing, 100% viewfinder, flash sync 1/250, etc. There does appear to be a difference in the exposure metering system. The D7000 lists TTL exposure metering using 2,016-pixel RGB sensor, while the D300S is 1,005-pixel RGB sensor 3D Color Matrix Metering II, Variable Center-weighted, Spot.

I know this is comparing the D7000 to the D300S but this is a replacement for the D90. In comparing the two I like the 39 point autofocus points and the all weather chassis. The increased HD video, higher frame per second rate etc. will not do enough for me consider an up grade. The higher mega-pixel I actually don't want. I shoot in RAW and this would just make the files bigger and require more disc space for storage. This looks like a nice camera and I would strongly consider it if I didn't already have a D90 but am not tempted at all to up grade.

edit: I just read the Nikon announcement and found it also has twin SD card slots and will allow you to separate RAW and JPEG files to individual cards. That is a nice feature. Still not enough for me to buy it at $1200 for the body alone, but still looks like a nice camera.

Is this a replacement for the D90? I haven't heard that D90 production has stopped and that usually precedes the introduction of a model replacement. I can't see this as a replacement to the D300s either because it is still in production. Perhaps Nikon is just introducing another model to try and expand their market share. They may have a D90 replacement in the works but I don't think it's out yet.

Does anyone know when the D7000 will be available? Most websites, Amazon.com etc. say that it is "coming soon". Who do you think will have it first?

A couple of things I like about my D300s and D700 are that they are only 12mp and the layout of the mode and function buttons is much better. The D7000 is set up more like the D90.
