How much would you pay for a used D700 now ( march/april 2012 )

Hi all!

I currently have a D60 with 18-55 kit lense and a 50mm 1.8G. I was about to buy the 35mm DX and 10-24mm DX for our next trip to USA and Italy, but after much thinking, I prefer to invest / spend on a FX camera body then put around 1300-1400$ on more DX lenses (CAD)

The D800 is a bit too expensive to my liking, when you factor the price of CF card, extra battery, grip, etc and other lenses that I will surely want to buy. That's where a used D700 comes to mind. I would certainly not be limited by the camera in either case...

For me, hd video is a no-factor since I already got a hd video camera with hard disk and everything and it's not getting used much.

I don't want to buy something and tell myself that for a bit more I could have had the next best thing. In that case, I would just buy the D800 and wait a little for lenses or accessories. If the D800 comes haunting me at night, I want to be able to tell myself that the D700 was a steal at that price! :)

What would be a fair price to pay for a D700 in good condition? How much would be ready to pay more if it came with used grips / batteries / etc ?

Thanks a lot!

Frank

I don't think you are going to see much of a drop D700s are a "hot item" right now - I know I can sell mine for $2400.00 body only.

I would wait and see what Nikon releases later in the year. Rumors are for a 16MP Fx (D400?) to place in the D700 market segment. In my opinion, they will come out with something Fx under the D800 price, so I would not go for a D700 now. I'm waiting for the next best Dx, but if they come out with an Fx under $2600, I may jump into Fx.

Since Nikon dropped the list price in the US to $2199, I'm seeing used bodies going between $1700-1900 on Nikonians and Fred Miranda.

I looked at some stores and Adorama, BH, Ebay also shows that kind of price for D700. Many people are selling their D700 to upgrade, so it's more of a buyer than seller market now.

Do you feel that's a good price or that it's still a bit expensive?

Brand new D800 for 3000$ or used / no warranty D700 for 1800$ ?

Do you guys have any opinion on this?

Thanks

Hi Frank.

I just went through the same decision process and picked up a mint condition (used) D700 in mid-February. I live in Canada and went through the Fred Miranda site (you can get really great deals on used equipment there).

I was lucky that I hooked up with a local seller in Toronto who was selling his D700 (just over 4,000 shutter clicks) along with the MB- D10 grip, an extra Nikon lithium battery and a San Disk Ultra II 8GB card (body, grip and extra battery all in original boxes and packaging etc.). I paid $2,000 for this package which in mid-Feb would have retailed - with tax - for $3,000 (a savings of $1,000) which I think was a pretty darn good deal.

For a body only in excellent condition with lowish shutter count I would say you could easily get one on FM for under $2,000.

- I know I can sell mine (D700) for $2400.00 body only.

I want some of what you're smoking Sam! LOL! Now I'm sure you D700 is in great condition but check out these prices for brand NEW D700s in the US and Canada - with tax, etc. included - as per Photoprice.ca:

However, as they say: "there's one born every second!" :)

You can buy new D700's at B&H for $2199, no reason to buy a used one IMO.

I would respectfully disagree as that's viewing it through the lens of your personal bank balance Dave! lol! :)

If a person can get a used D700 in great condition with a low shutter count for $1,600 or $1,700 then there is plenty of reason to buy used as that $2,199 usually doesn't include tax, etc. making the difference that much greater.

Why are they showing tax on these? Unless you live in NY (or where ever the shop is located) there shouldn't be any tax and the shipping is generally free, so the base price is the price, no?

Ahh, I forgot you live in Canada. We don't have tax and in general no shipping here in the states provided we buy out of state (something that they're looking at changing). So $1700 to $2199 is $500. For that $500 you get the original Nikon warranty and you get a camera that has not been mistreated. For only $500, that's not a bad deal. But nevertheless, $500 is $500. I guess it's just a perspective thing.

Another big reason why my wife would love to live in Monterey Dave! :)

The used market is always particularly attractive due to all the taxes you save. Especially so if you buy a product that's generally cheaper in the US on the used market like Fred M. You get the benefit of the lower US price and no taxes. It's great. However all this US buying from Canada is predicated on a strong Canadian dollar! :)

Oh yeah, Monterrey. What a great piece of planet earth that is. A little colder than here in SD and maybe a little too close to San Fran but oh such a nice place to live. Have you ever considered San Luis Obispo? A little smaller and further out of the way of both LA and SF but way up there in on livability scale.

One of the biggest reasons my wife and I are drooling over Monterrey is the idyllic weather! We loathe humidity and Toronto gets heaps of it in the summer. Monterrey is so consistently temperate (we jealously look at the weather network when we see Monterrey pop up! :)

No we haven't. However I will definitely run that by the wife and get it on her radar. Thanks Dave.

Hi all. I just found this forum. I have been wanting D700 for months. I'm thrilled to see the price drop. My question is, does anyone know if it will drop again soon (based on past experience)? Or should I grab one now? (Still debating whether to get a new or used one.)

Hello Pam and welcome to the forum.

Well the official retail price for new D700s has just been dropped so I don't see any further across the board price drops coming any time soon for new D700s. The impact on the used market is still unfolding but no doubt there is a downward pressure on used D700 prices. Again, the prices in the used market aren't going to go into a free fall as the D700 is still a fabulous, high quality camera body. Based on my review of the used market on Fred Miranda - D700 bodies only are usually going for between $1,750 and $1,900 and with the grip included up to $2,000. I'm not sure which area you live in (Canada, US or other) but local market conditions will vary of course.

I really don't think things will soften up substantially in the near term but it's all supply and demand and the demand for D700s appears to remain very strong. Don't forget that when any new product is released, just as there are the people who pounce on the newest offering there is another large group who are standing on the sidelines waiting to snap up the "old" product. In this case another dynamic is at work - those who never thought FX would come down to the sub-$2,000 level making FX very attainable. So along with the usual deal seekers, you have those in the DX world having a real opportunity to get into the FX domain with one of Nikon's best cameras. So yes, you can get a pretty decent deal now on D700s but with such strong fundamentals behind the demand for a D700, I just don't see the used market giving up much more than you're getting today.

PS. Pam - please take a moment to fill out your profile and also post a thread in our new member introductions area telling who you are! http://nikonites.com/new-member-introductions/

As for second hand D700s, don't expect a huge drop until the D800 is widely available at stores.
Also remember that many D700 owners are also trying to sell their D700 at max price before the D800 is fully available, thinking that still can make value of it. And they can because there is a shortage of Nikon FX bodies at the moment.

between 1500-1800 seems to be the Ebay price, you sometimes can get premium dollar if you throw in kit lens, I have sold one thru ebay, and you definitely get bids quickly, but make sure you get your funds before shipping or sell local. Might not get as much selling local. Good Luck.. and enjoy your D800, fantastic camera.

thanks stmv, i have it on amazon and got a quote from adorama, and see there are some completed listings on ebay at a good price, i'll try that if there is no interest on the other two methods

seems that amazon and ebay/paypal have hefty fees, i guess it's a trade off for safety that i'll get paid and not jacked by a craigslister
