Saw a mock-up photo of a D700 replacement on Ace Photo's Facebook page along with this caption...

HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING...... (This is NOT from Nikon USA, this is an ACE Photo Exclusive-)

Let's imagine that in a few weeks, the world will be introduced to a new Nikon FX Full Frame camera; a "Mini-D4" DSLR. Think of it as a replacement for the D700. Our best guess is that it would feature the D4's incredible 16MP sensor and low light performance in a D700 sized body. Our research tells us that there will be NO Anti-Aliasing filter (much like the D800E)and a camera like this would offer a very high frame rate. The hypothetical cost is guestimated to be around 2799.00 USD>

Hypothetically speaking....the demand for this camera will be very high and supplies will be low. If you wanted to reserve your place in this hypothetical line, we would be taking deposits of $100 which will be applied to your purchase. All cameras will be hypothetically sold according to the list in the order they were received. We have learned in the past that "friends of the store" are hoping to line jump, which only causes confusion and upset customers, so this is our solution for the problem before it begins.
The ONLY way to get a place in hypothetical line is to with a deposit. If no such camera is released, would that hypothetical deposit be refundable?....certainly.

Call the store at 703-430-3333 if you wish to discuss what it might feel like to have YOUR name high on the hypothetical waiting list. I bet it will feel great!

Oh....and wouldn't it be cool if Nikon also released a stripped down version of this camera ( with no video or fancy features) for pure photography only for less than 1999.00?

You can call us about that, too

Have a nice day!

Hypothetically speaking, I'm wondering if I should sell my D800 and get one of these. Hypothetically.

That sounds great! I'd like the stripped-down version

Hypothetically speaking: In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is. For the hypothetical (introduction) price you can buy a D800. A stripped down version is the D600, it even has video.

Maybe if I didn't have the D800E yet, I might consider jumping in the band wagon. However, the D800E to me is already a superb camera for my use. I've always dreamed of something like this before such as a FX camera with a D3s sensor placed in a D700 body, priced between $2,500 to $3k. Don't hold your breath on that one.

I get what you're saying, but it's a bit of apples and oranges. If it does have the D4 sensor and a higher frame rate (8-10 fps?) then it's something "other" and a great fit for the sports and nature photographer who relies on the higher frame rate (the D800 only gives you 5.5 fps and 6 with a grip, the D600 is 5 fps). I don't shoot video much, and have bodies that do, so if I really needed the frame rate the ability to get it at under $2K with that D4 sensor is very tempting. So many people will tell you that 16MP's is just about ideal for any type of photography. I just pray it doesn't have a small buffer like the D7100. LOL

Was this presented as a joke by them or is it a rumor which could be true?

I think if there came such a camera in that pricerange, that would be kind of cannibalism.

I have a feeling this so-called "Ace" is just hoping for another orgy of profits like those gained from reselling the D800. I doubt very much a scaled down D4 is going to have the impact the D800 did. Nor do I think another tsunami will occur causing a massive lack of inventory, either. Just wishful thinking on his part, I suspect.

I would say not having tried the D700 and the D4, that those of you that have might be subconsiously thinking in terms of having all the things you like about them combined. But my guess is that if they do make this, that it will fall short of being as cool as it might sound. Or I believe the price would jump up like a kangaroo on steroids to cover the loss they would have on the D4 sales. I think Dave is right and they are just trying to start a buying spree based on the popularity of those two cameras.
I'll stick to my plan of eventually getting a D600!:D
But all of this is just my guess! Lol :D

I'll just hypothetically send them a hypothetical $100 deposit to hold my hypothetical place in their hypothetical line to be hypothetically eligible to hypothetically send them the rest of the hypothetical purchase price to hypothetically purchase this hypothetical replacement for the D700.

Sheesh!
