Question Old DSLR image issues - is this a bad CCD sensor?

    Hello everyone!

So I got an old DSLR (D70S) that has major image issues.
A friend was going to throw it out, but I thought it might be worth fixing it.

Attached are the sample images that it takes.
I am thinking this is a bad CCD sensor. If it is the case, I can just replace it and have a camera that will take decent pictures and I don't have to worry about breaking.

What do you all think? Is this a bad sensor? Or is it something simpler that just needs adjustment?

    Thanks everyone!

? I have no idea. Have you tried to do a reset of the camera? It does look like something is way out of order, but I have no idea what. Have you tried different card, B&W mode?

You should send this picture to Nikon service center and ask them.

I pretty sure that streaked and displaced LCD image indicate the LCD is bad.

That's what I forgot to ask. Did you try to look at photos from the card or is this just from the back of the camera?

These are the actual images downloaded from the memory card, not LCD snapshots.
I did try a reset - no change.

Contact Nikon service center unless you think you can replace a sensor yourself... I don't think Nikon would still support and repair this older model. But you might be lucky. If it was me, I would not repair it. Better get yourself a used D90 or even D40 could be better.

are these images from in-camera JPEG, for Nikon ".NEF" raw format files?

I would try shooting in Raw, and looking at the .NEF files just to rule out the JPEG engine having a bad data path. Since the camera was free, you have nothing to lose!

    Thanks everyone!
Raw images were bad as well. I picked found a working used sensor for $30, so I'll replace it and see what happens.
Like Brian said above, I got nothing to lose in this case, but might gain a decent camera.

I'll let you all know how it goes next week once I get the sensor.

    Thanks again.

Replacement sensor is in, camera is as good as new!
Now I need to find a good used lens for it.....
