Guess back to basics for a bit..

Still don't know how, but managed to drop mine and so its back to the 5100 w/ all the glass until I send in the 6 for the "free" shutter thing again and hopefully damaged mirror hinge (on the right side) won't cost over 3-400 or so. My 55/1.2 took the same dive and, the stock UV filter took the spill cracking completely but also damaging the threads that I will have to figure out how to remedy as best I can (probably dremel it out, as best possible, and maybe removing the thread ring to file down the dented area or something) so at the very least I want to say - do not use "protection filters" because they may likely cause more damage that they're worth. Front element is fine, but from the angle of the dive it would've been anyway. A bent and hollowed out filter seems like more of a pain to deal with.

So there go 2 weeks and maybe some of using this babe, but all lessons learned and a well-timed refresher on to ALWAYS secure it on me - wrap around the wrist, or cross the strap around the neck to avoid any possibility of spilling.

IF anything, I needed a bit of a wakeup call, and luckily it shouldnt cost TOO much. Plus going back to basics as a refresher to boot for the time being.

(And all in all, was worth it despite the end result)

Ouch, hopefully the repair bill won't be too painful.

I have been thinking lately that I should at least get a wrist strap, I don't use a neck strap as I find it a nuisance.
This may make me think about it more seriously.

That's really unlucky. I read similar stories about filters taking the fall but in doing so, got stuck into the lens.

I slipped when using my camera, it took a drop and luckily it landed on the flash in the hotshoe so the flash too the brunt of the fall, camera and 50mm 1.8 were fine luckily, after that happened I immediately ordered a Black Rapid strap for my camera !!

Fingers crossed its not too costly for you !!

Back in the day you could use your SLR to hit a nail in if you didn't find the hammer. It's hard to imagine those things were solid once.

Yea no kiddin. Might try to masking tape the front element and carefully partially cut the filter ring and see if it will budge.

If you use a dremel you could try a small grinder disk and try to cut it at one area. You'll cut the threads but if you'd weaken the ring enough, you can bend it back and like that turn it and pull it out. The damaged threads can be cleaned up but it'll depend how much room you have to work between the filter and the front element.

But it needs to be seriously protected since any particle that hits the glass when grinding will burn into it.

If the lens itself is still intact at the front, using a small chisel or screwdriver and hammer the filter out is also an option. If the damage isn't too bad, it should screw itself out when using mild force.

As long as you got a steady hand, that seems like a safer option. But I have no idea how bad the damage is.

"back to basics" implies, to me, a loss of knowledge, or a bad habit that has formed to cause you to forget beginning things (ISO/aperture/shutter speed) learned long ago. Relying on a back-up camera is something entirely different! ;)

Sorry to hear you dropped your main, and about the damage. Hope it comes out under your projected cost, and quicker than expected as well! Until then, keep applying the same skills to your back-up (with a little re-learning curve for the loss of quick controls) and keep rockin'!

You should provide a photo so we can see what the damage is.

Normally I would if it were something feasible on my own, but slanted mirror with the right hinge being off its matching area and the whole thing just not budging back to normal position - goner. I looked up the general disassembly and mirror box is behind one too many thousands of screws and most other internals for me to merit digging into to put in an ebay mirror assembly in...

It should get to the Melville facility sometime today and I'll hope they'll peek into it tomorrow and get back to me with exact numbers. I also mentioned a free, at least cleaning and a look-see at the shutter since advisory is still in effect and I'm already going to pay them for something.... we'll see what happens, but if the final estimate will be lower or same as they automatically generated one, I'll be pretty content.

Update 1, on the 55/1.2: real tank of a lens! I fiddled with the area where filter got mushed in, clipped some of the top half of the material and carefully bent that area inwards and presto! Unjammed, unscrewed, and the lens is just fine. Good to know that the aluminum they use for these is squishy enough, so perhaps it did serve as a cushion, but perhaps the lens would've been just fine on its own since the impact had no effects on the threads.

Definitely not using any misc/protective ones from this point on.

So, BILLING stage as of right now. My guess is that they'll ship it out today or tomorrow. That's a 6-7 day turnaround in shop, so not too bad honestly.
