Sell or keep?

Since acquiring my D810 I had planned to sell the D610 to help recuperate the costs, which would leave me with the D7100, as I like the extra DX reach and DOF for some subjects. Only today though, I was thinking that the D610 is the better low light camera of the three and it could be a better idea to sell the 7100 and 3 dx lenses which would give me back some and then enough to buy another wide lens to replace the tokina 116 that I would be selling.
For any of you with a D800 or 810 and either a 610 or 7100, which would you be more willing to sell off, the D610 or D7100? I'm still left with a compact for some things that I use the D7100 for on occasions.

I don't know that it helps in your decision, but my plan is to keep the D7100 for long range zoom (wildlife, etc), while eventually getting a full frame for my general purpose camera body.

I'm intrigued by your finding though that the D610 is better in low light than the D810 ... I thought that was the big selling point with the D810 was the low light capabilities. Ultimately, I think it would come down to how often do you see using that DX reach?

To echo Dave, DX doesn't give greater DoF, it just exhibits more DoF than FX at the same equivalent focal length since you need to shoot with a wider angle lens.

That said, the High ISO differences are really nitpicks between the D810 and the D600/610 - so close that I'd call it a wash. If you do things where you can use the reach I would say you're better off with the FX/DX combination. I worked with a D800 & D600 for over a year before going back to the D7100 for reach because the while D800 could get me most of the way to where I needed to be, the lower frame rate and big files were a drawback when doing all that cropping in post (and in DX mode, shooting action with a partial viewfinder was more of a pain than dealing with the big files).

As was asked, what do you use to make your money? If the reach of the D7100 earns you some of that then I highly suggest you hold onto it.

You indicate that you are a semi-pro so which ones make you money? ;)
Well to be honest, my little canon G12 makes me as much as any of the DSLR cameras, as I work for a variety of different publications, each with a different 'standard'. So I can definitely get away with the G12 and any one of the Nikons, but obviously the D810 can cover pretty much everything and is the best overall. From what I've seen so far though, the D610 seems to give better results at night.

Yes, I meant exhibits more DOF sorry, which is handy for some things I do, and yes that reach is beneficial, but the D810 has DX mode and images can always be cropped. Just thinking that's all, as I was originally keeping the 7100.

I would retain the FF and sell the DX body and lenses, so that I have one type of lense. At a later date I would also upgrade the D610 at a later date with a model that has no AA filter and a faster processor.

A wide on FF will have the same FOV as an ultrawide on DX, though FF wides are quite expensive.

Psssst, folks - DX bodies use FX lenses just fine!! You can keep the body and still upgrade and share glass. With rare exception all my glass is full frame, including the lenses that spends the most time on my D7100.

Before you go selling the D7100, spend a week shooting the D810 in DX mode and see if you can live with it. It's 2 fps short, and after years of shooting with the entire viewfinder it's amazingly difficult to adjust to one that's 44% the size and keep things framed. If you can then kudos. If not, then you have your answer.

D810/D610...If you are a working Professional this makes more sense...Then you can also get the glass you want by selling the D7100...Good Luck

Why don't you wait a bit and make darn sure that the 810 is what you need. What if you'd be better with the 610+7100 combination? These two cameras have very similar configuration, same button layout and smaller size than the 810. Food for thoughts.

I attempted to keep my D7000 as a back up to my D800 but once I got used to the viewing the world through the lens of a full frame camera, the DX just seemed crowded and uninspiring so I tended never to use it. As a result, I sold it and bought a second FX body.

You should weight the pro's and con's of each body to help decide which will work better for you. What might work well for one person may not work as well for you.

For me, the advantage to the D7100 is the fact it can offer large cropped-view files on the tele end as well as with macro. On the wide end, full frame would be my preference. And for low light, the D610 would be my preference As Jake mentioned, you won't need any DX lenses so if it were me, I'd sell any of those and stick with all FX lenses for all camera bodies.

So if I had to make this choice, I'd sell the DX lenses then see whether I use the D610 or D7100 more as a second body. Personally I prefer FX bodies so I'd be inclined to stick with the D610. The D800 will still yield decent size files when cropped which eliminates the necessity for a DX body. Ultimately *you* need to see which will work best for your situation. Good luck with your decision! :)

Definitely 100% sure about the D810, it's a dream machine! If I didn't have to recoup the cash I would probably just keep both, but I did have 3 dx cameras at one stage and quickly realised that there was no point to it, although 2 were the 7000 and 5100 which had the same sensor. I will go through all your thoughtful responses again a few times, as you are all helping me make the decision, which is a great thing about a forum like this!

Yes it is great in low light, but so far (it's splitting hairs) the D610 seems a bit cleaner to me, at least with the 50f1.8g lens that I've been using on both bodies. However, this could simply be due to the fact that everything is more magnified or exaggerated when pixel peeping with the D810.
After a lot of thought, reading all the above responses and considering my own personal requirements, I'm now leaning more towards my original idea of keeping the D7100 and selling the D610. It would probably work out to be more beneficial for my needs with one dx and one fx body.
