How much shots with GPS turned off?

Hi,

I would like to know how much shots the D5300 will get with the GPS feature disabled with a fully charged battery? I am not interested in GPS. I checked out the manual and it say's that you can turn the GPS off so that's good.

The only time I think I will enable it would be if I'm on a cruise vacation stopping at different ports throughout the trip.

Thanks

I'm sure that GPS would not make much of a detrimental effect on battery life as you are thinking. It only geo tags the photos to where they are taken. You will still be limited by the max images that your camera is based with.

GPS will have a minor effect on battery drain. Yes it'll drain some by checking and tagging (the shots and you) but it's next to nothing compared to using live-view. It's just a signal sent and received.

I am guessing if you have the manual then you have the camera, I would try it out and see what difference it will make. If it is always looking for satellites it will churn through the battery.

I agree with Scott the only way to really know is to try, I agree with the GPS being useless for most of the time, the only reason I would use it again is for on Holiday so I can tag the places I have been

No prob if you guys don't know. I spent my lunch hr today at my local camera shop checking out the D5300 and a few other bodies. The salesman helped me out with the few questions I had.

Phankx anyways

It's impossible to say exactly because the battery powers things other than the shutter (like the rear LCD for reviewing photos and the on-board flash just to name a couple). My girlfriend shoots with a D5300 (no GPS enabled) and we've shot for days together without either of us needing to switch batteries so I know the D5300 battery is good for several hundred shots easily.

I can't give a good answer either, and I own a D5300. I have never used the GPS feature and very rarely use "Live View". I also very seldom look at a capture with the LCD while out catching a photo or two. I don't get crazy with the number of pictures taken in a day and have probably only used the built in flash a couple of times. With all of that info, my battery usually holds a charge for weeks of use. When I have used the "Live View", I have noticed a much faster battery discharge than under my normal conditions.

Saying all of this, I think each individual will have to just play to see how their style works with the camera/battery life. You would probably be hard pressed to detect a very noticeable difference with and without the GPS as it pertains to battery life.

Thanks for the feedback HF. The reason why I asked was because Nikon claims the D5500 will take 200 more shots than the D5300 but I read on flickr from a D5300 owner that if he disables GPS on his 5300 he will get close to what the D5500 claims. Now 200 less shots by the D5300 is not a deal breaker to me really. I was just trying to weigh the pro's and cons for each camera according to what I like. I know how good the D5300 is. I was on the fence for the last 7 months looking to buy one for vacations, family functions and street photography. I have a D7100 and love it but I do not want to take it on vacations because of its size and the fact that it looks like a big expensive SLR to would be thieves.

I have always thought the D5xxx bodies would make a great vacation camera because of their size, weight and the fact that they look more entry level and do not scream "big expensive DSLR here".

Thanks again

Makes sense. Thanks for the reply grizz. There is no bad choice between the D5300 and the D5500. Both are winners imo.
