Auto focus not working from trigger

Just got my Nikon D5300 and love it! However, auto focus isn't working from the trigger for some reason.

It DOES work from the AE-L AF-L button though.

Is there some setting I need to adjust or something?

Hi Nathan
sounds like you are set for back button focusing
f4 in Controls menu Assign AE-L/AF-L button could be set to AF-ON

You say you just got the camera; did you buy it used? No Nikon camera comes new out of the box with the AF set to the back button, so if was sold to you as a new camera, and you did not change the custom functions to set it for back button AF, the camera was not new.

Hm, I uploaded a photo and it said this: "It looks like your camera doesn't supply the necessary information."

I did, however, upload it after sending it to myself via WiFI to my iPhone, then emailing it to myself, then finally uploading it from my computer.

However, when I looked at the file on my computer, it did tell me that it was originally from my Nikon D5300.

Everything else seems to work fine though. I did purchase it new from Amazon.com, which I checked and is listed as a Nikon approved reseller. When I received it it was all in the Nikon box, with all the components in place, as far as I could see.

Thanks for all the help and the concern.

As long as you are happy with it that is all that matters. If you did not make the menu change, someone did and that means that you did not get a brand-new camera. Perhaps it was sold and returned, but new-in-the-box Nikon cameras do not have the AF-L/AE-L button set to start AF.

Just for your info Nathan, the back button focus is very handy way to focus once you get use to it. It keeps it in focus as long as your holding the button down! It's great for moving subjects! :)

I'm starting to use my back button focus more myself because of that! :)

Anyway I'm really glad your liking your Nikon! :D
