Need help triggering off camera speedlight

Hello! I have a Nikon D5200 and a Newer Speedlight. I cannot figure out how to trigger the flash while it's off camera. I have read threads about the D5200 not having a commander mode so I understand that but I have the receiver on the camera in the hotshot and the transmitter on the flash off camera. No matter if it's in manual or slave mode on the flash, it won't fire. Help!

I think you need to put the "Transmitter" on the camera hot shoe and the "Receiver" on the flash. (Disclaimer: I haven't used an OCF, but to my way of thinking, it only makes sense that the transmitter needs to send the signal from the camera hot shoe to the Flash receiver.)

Do you have a model number for the Newer Speedlight and tranX/Recer that you have?

You should be able to trigger the flash with the rec/Tx without the camera being involved...

Oh, and welcome to the Forum. It is a great place/resource to learn your camera and photography.

make sure that the jumper switches are matching (unless you have a more expensive trigger system). Then make sure that the flash is set to manual mode.

With the Yongnuo you can set the Speedlight on I-TTL and then have full control over them from the camera.

only if it is the Yongnuo version that supports ittl....
non ttl transmitter/receivers will still need to setup to have matching jumpers/channels to properly receive/transmit signals.
