Hi All,

I have a D5200 and I’m thinking about upgrading it to abetter body. What are my options in stages. Meaning I don’t think I can spend$5000. If you can help me with what would be the next best options and thenwhat the option after wards until the most expensive…

All your replies are much appreciated.

There are certain things a better body will do,it may handle high ISO better,it may have a better dynamic range,it may be easier for you to handle and other things but if you look at the cameras some guys on here are using and the results they get its not a done deal that a better body will give better results, now if you fancy a change thats a different and understandable situation. :D

Hi, I like your question :)

Well I guess a better body might give me better quality results than my 5200.

Quality is very subjective and depends on plenty a thing that has often little to do with the camera itself. There are loads of options to upgrade but for some you pay more for buttons and settings while quality differs more on paper than is visible to us in a shot.

I upgraded from the D3300 to the D750 and yes on average there is a serious improvement in quality but it didn't come cheap and occasionally I still take an as good or better shot with the D3300.

if your shooting low light then yes a better body will give better iso range , along with other benifits like faster continuous shooting , larger files etc etc , better glass is normally a better option ,so depending on the glass you have now it can be an expensive option to upgrade to say a d810 full frame where they will shine with expensive glass so you be spending about 3k for body plus good lenses at least 2k which is out of your range , what about a d7100 , its what i use and does everything i want , you can get one with a 70-300 lens for about 1000 dollars , toss a tokina 11-16 and a 50mm 1.8 and you have a good start for about 1800 , if you already own some of these lenses then its a bonus

The D5200 is a great all around camera. I do not feel you would be doing yourself justice to just go out and get a new camera, unless what you are looking for is a bit more control of the camera itself. The sensor is still fine and up to date, and it's a light camera which is easy to walk around with.
So tell us the real reason you are looking to step away from the d5200, so that you can get a better opinion on if the upgrade to something newer is worth it.

Also check out something like snapsort.com so that you can compare any newer/older cameras and if the specs are more to your likings.

Thank you all for your comments. Infact after seeing your points I realized that I probably need not upgrade my body. I will invest that money on a Nikor 105mm Marco which I have been waiting to get hold of.

You stand a good chance of seeing a serious benefit with that choice, look forward to seeing some results.

I use to change bodies frequently till I landed on this D7000. It does everything Iexpect a camera body to do and like it's controls very much. Will probably not seek anew body until this one develops serious problems or is damaged or stolen. If I get any money to spend on camera gear it will definitely go into better glass.

Only 2 upgrades to a 5200 presently IMHO.

D7100 and full frame models such as D600/610 D750.....for DX I prefer D300 or a D300s to your camera as I like the pro controls but you have a better sensor and ultimately can produce better quality images.

The biggest gain you get upgrading to a D7100 is the ability to find and purchase Nikon AF D glass. All my D glass is fabulous and I purchased at very attractive prices......

I think the D7100 is outstanding and will grab one for myself if a sweet deal (extremely cheap) presents itself!
