5100 and commander mode

Since the 5100 doesn't have commander mode, how best to use external flashes? I purchased a SB-700 which works in commander mode, so would the best bet just get an external flash (strobe) that works in commander mode, using the 700 on the camera to take advantage of iTTL?

Having just now jumped into digital kicking and screaming a bit from film, I'm still climbing the learning curve...just trying to get the most out of the camera!

Hi RickySA,

You could get the SU-800 commander, it will be able to trigger your SB700 wirelessly. It sits on top of the hotshoe allowing you to set your parameters for the speedlight or a group of speedlights.

You could also use your pop up flash as a trigger. You will need to set your speedlight to SU-4 though. This can be done in the main menu on the speedlight and then simply switch it to remote. for this, you will have to improvise a little as you may not want the pop up flash to interfer with your shot. I use a SB 900, then take some foil and cover the pop up flash, but make enough room that the flash can still send a signal to the speedlight.

Another alternative is wireless triggers, you can set the TTL function manually on the speedlight.
