So today i bought an hdmi cable thinking i could hook it up to a monitor and everything work great......this was not the case. I have tried lowering the resolution on the monitor settings and that didnt do anything. The only thing it does is play whats on the sd card, no live view.

I hooked up the composite out and it worked but the quality is terrible and the live view shuts off after i begin to record. Whats going on here?

Welcome

Are you trying to record to the computer...When I tried to hook up my camera to a laptop for a better view of the subjects i had to get a program to do this...I can hook it to Lightroom and it shows each image...Maybe this might work

I just tried this on my Dell computer monitor and the HDMI works for me in both playback and liveview. The camera HDMI setting is in auto. It takes a few seconds for the liveview to pop up so you have to be patient.

possibly due to an HDMI handshake issue? if the standards are different on your monitor and on the camera this *could* cause that issue?

Go to the menu and select HDMI and select turn off the device then turn the camera off and then on again - hook up the HDMI cable to an external monitor or TV and it WORKS...live view on an external monitor! . I tried and had the same problem you are having, Nikon tech support said it could not be done, but guess what this works!
