D5100 and Wu-1a Wifi adaptor

Well today was a big day for me, Joined this forum and bought a D5100 !

Question : Does Wu-1a Wifi adaptor work with the D5100 ??

The link on the NIKON site says "For Nikon Digital-SLR Cameras".

Vendor sites , eg here, say say "With the release of the new WU-1a, users can enjoy the beautiful images captured with Nikon digital-SLR cameras.."

Yet both then start to reference the D3200 only.

UPDATE :: You cannot use the wu-1a on the D5100, but you can use something like the Eye-fi card

You are correct, thanks for the reality check, it's no big thing to transfer pictures. I was just "hoping for the moon" so-to-speak, when I opened the box. and, now I will focus on the bigger purpose for this camera for me, learning how to use this powerful new gift; and I hope to learn from this forum.

I missed the part about the gift ! Ya, likely one of the first things I would look for as well given so much is wi-fi these days and uploading photos is a common task.

In the absence of built in native wi-fi:
  • Workaround A is the eye-fi card - its interesting but I dont think they make a high speed high capacaity version, so it didnt work out for me.
  • Workaround B is eye-fi in the second slot - but only on cameras like the D7000 have it
  • Workaround C is the wu-1a adaptor, but its for the 3200 only. Even if it worked on the 5100, is not seamless. I would hate carrying around that little adaptor. May as well just plug in a cable if I need to plug in an adaptor!
  • Workaround D - use a cable
  • Workaround E - remove the card and use a card reader. This is what I currently do now, typically after an 'event' where i take a whack of pics. I just dont bother if I only have one or two.
Enjoy your gift . Lots to learn at first, but its a great camera.

The EYE-fi card is very slow transferring the pictures, if you shoot at full resolution each picture will take a few minutes to transfer, I tested on a cheap camera on 640x480 picture setting and after taking the picture in 3-5 seconds it was on my computer but who uses 640x480 pictures anymore?

Hey, I just joined the nikonites today... I'm wondering if there is a forum/board for buying/selling? I have a D5100 and I bought the adapter without doing any research... and waited too long to return it on amazon.
