Picked up a battery grip...wondering if it's worth it.

So after much (little) thinking, I decided to order a battery grip for my 5100. I got one from some strange Chinese kind of Amazon, or so it appears. (I used paypal, so I assume it'll be alright. Definitely monitoring my accounts though because you never know!)

It got good reviews, wondering if camera grips are like anything else in life..(you get what you pay for.)
This is what I got, mostly because of the price and my being out of work for the time being: Pro Battery Grip for Nikon D5100 EN-EL14 DSLR Camera | Nikon Battery Grips It doesn't seem to have an actual brand name so I couldn't do much other research on it other than the existing reviews.

So I suppose we'll see what it's like in oh...maybe 2 weeks haha! I'll most CERTAINLY do a write up on it when it comes in.
But seriously, for 20 bones, it was kind of a no-brainer. :single_eye:

So it finally came in today. I'm happy, yet not. I could have used it many times in the past 20 days.
The box came dented, but the grip is intact.

Works perfectly fine. Feels a little cheap, but then again, i am not sure how much different an official one would feel if they even made one for the D5100. I'm still getting used to how it feels and haven't shot in portrait orientation yet. I'm sure it'll be worth it. It's a fine purchase for the price.

Here it is with all my very heaviest gear attached just for kicks.

My recommendation? Order on Amazon. Quicker shipping, same exact product. Pretty much the same price. As for the product, the best 27 bucks i've spent so far on photography.

Hey Eurotrash, if you want to use the shutter release on the grip do you have to use a cable from the camera to the grip? If so, is that a pain in the butt because the cable sticks out to far?

Yup, you need to use the cable. It's not really a pain with the cable in per se, but the flip-out cover is what irks me the most. It doesn't get in the way for me so far, but I could see it catching on stuff and becoming annoying if you hold the camera in a funny way or something like that. Storage might be a pain in some bags.

How is that grip working for you? Are you using OEM Nikon batteries or aftermarket. Thinking of purchasing a grip myself however have read some people receive an error message about the batteries and camera won't work. Thanks for your feedback :)

I've been using it with one Nikon branded OEM battery so far in the right most position for physical balance. I didn't buy the grip for the extended battery life though, I bought it for comfort shooting in portrait orientation.

As far as functionality, I love it. It's simple, does what it does and hasn't given me one problem so far. I'm extremely happy and impressed with the grip. Get it on Amazon, however. Shipping took 20 days, the pricing is the exact same give or take a buck, and emailing the company was horrific at best to try and get a tracking number. The brand is "Meike" by the way if you couldn't tell from the picture of the box.
