Fixes in the Nikon D5100 v1.01 firmware update
Download it here
  • An error recognizing some memory cards has been addressed.
  • When Selective color from the retouch menu is performed on a picture taken with the image quality set to NEF (RAW)+JPEG and an image size of M or S, the edges of the image may not have changed color. This issue has been resolved.
  • When Metering was set to Matrix metering, the exposure mode set to M (Manual), and the HDR exposure differential set to Auto, the exposure differential was fixed at a value equivalent to 2 EV. This has been changed to enable automatic adjustment of exposure differential so that it is appropriate for the scene.

Greetings, I'm having a bit of trouble updating the firmware. I've gotten to the point where the dmg file is on the sd card and I've put it back in the camera, turned it on and go to firmware version. I can't seem to find how to get to the instructions in the camera to run the update. Pressing ok just toggles firmware on and off. Pressing ? does the same. Any ideas or an answer? Thank you in advance! Loren

so you did these steps, right?

- Use a card reader or similar device to copy the
D5100_0101.bin file to the root directory of a formatted SD memory card.
- Insert the memory card into the camera's memory card slot and turn on the camera. If the camera has dual memory card slots, insert the card into slot
-
Select Firmware version from the camera's setup menu and follow instructions displayed to upgrade the firmware.

thank you for getting back to me so fast. I must admit to user error. I dragged the wrong file to the sd card. I had the dmg not the bin file. I have successfully upgraded the firmware. The camera now sees the 16 gig extreme San Disk card I originally bought for the camera. I was using a micro sd card for my cell phone.

Call me daring/odd/stupid, but I wish there was a way to roll back to original. From what I gathered, they only implemented battery chip check on coldboot in the second to original version and I'd personally prefer to go without it.

In fact, let me just make a new thread of my successful and perhaps daring (given there may ALWAYS be a chance of bricking with these things) operation.

In short, yes, I'm NOT paying $30 more for the same exact thing. Not since cellphone days.

I just checked the site for the firmware for the D5100 and found that my versions (1.01) for A and B were the current ones. However, the site did not mention that I saw anything about L. My questions:
1. What is the current version for L?
2. If 1.003 is not the current version, what is the current version and what difference does it make in the operation of D5100?

Thanks for any help.

I think that 1.003 L is the current.

I checked my firmware on my D5100. I find I have 1.01 on both A and B and 1.003 on L. However, on the site where the firmware updates are listed, nothing is listed for L.... my questions:
1. Is 1.003 the current/correct version for L?
2. If not, what is?
3. If not, what would the later version of L do that my current version isn't doing?

Thanks for any help.
