Hi I am looking at buying a new lens for my D5100 I want to try and do some close up portrait work.

Would I be best going for a fixed focal lens or a zoom lens

So any advice would be nice

Hi ShootRaw thanks for the advice. but im not sure if I will take to this style of photograph and it a little more than I wanted to spend on a trial run

Then my second recommendation would be the 50mm 1.8G for half that price..This will still be a 75mm FOV that will still be great for portraits and low-light...

Yeah the 85mm 1.8g is what you are looking for if you're looking at shooting portraits. You won't regret buying it.

Nikkor 85 mm f1.8G is on my "to buy" list. However, I am also tempted by Tamron 90 mm f2.8 Di VC. It has very good image quality and a bonus of image stabilisation and 1:1 macro. On the other hand it is f2.8 and it is also bigger and heavier.
