Is my lense broken?

Hi all. A few days ago i dropped my camera from the hight of my waist. After that I noticed the most front part of the lense - the one thats used to focus - is slighlty loose and I can move it up and down . I can't remember if it was like that before i dropped it. Autofocus is working ok and the pictures look normal but I haven't done any tests or anything like that. So is this normal ?

It is not normal for a lens to be dropped. It could be working now but there is no guarantee that it will keep working. There are a lot of moving parts in a lens combined with electronic boards that could have been affected. You could send it in for an appraisal and see what Nikon say. The camera should also be sent with the lens since the lens mount could have been bent and the focal plane be off-centered.

Can somebody just check on his camera if the most front part of the lense is slightly loose and can be moved up and down a little or it cannot be moved at all ? This would help me a lot - thanks .

Each lense is different. In some the front is zoom ring in some the focus ring. If you can tell which lense it is, better still post a picture of it will be easier to reply.

PS. Just found on other forums that is normal for AF lenses from this level to have a loose focus ring. Can you confirm this ?

This is the cheap kit lens that comes with the camera - and because it has VR, the front ie outer most element is "floating" - thus very loose! It's normal.
